As many of you know, over the past few years I’ve gone from just strictly playing poker as a career to dividing my efforts between playing poker, coaching poker students, working with poker rooms to promote and improve their products, and most importantly doing more charity work. In 2014 I founded the Charity Series of Poker (CSOP) and over the past three years we’ve raised $150,000 for Habitat for Humanity, food banks and Brad Garrett’s Maximum Hope Foundation which provides financial assistance to the families of terminally ill children.
Without getting too sappy on you, I’m very fortunate and blessed to live the life I live and I believe it’s my duty to give back to the less fortunate now that I’m in the position I’m in. While playing poker for a living is awesome and I love doing it, it has always left me wanting to do something more “important” with my time I guess you could say. Not only does the CSOP give me a creative outlet to accomplish this goal, but it gives other poker players a way to give back in a way that doesn’t feel like a chore and doesn’t break the bank. I’ve had people tell me that the most fun they’ve ever had playing poker is at CSOP events and I can’t tell you how much that means to me.
The ninth Charity Series of Poker event is set to run this Saturday, January 28th at 6:30pm and we expect another good time for a great cause at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa. It’s a $220 turbo tournament and will pay out tons of cash prizes for the winners. We’d like to thank Borgata for generously donating food and drinks for our open bar pre-party which will run from 4:30-6pm at Gypsy Bar. All players registered for the tournament are invited to attend!
This year’s event will once again run the night before the Borgata Winter Open Main Event and will benefit Support the Kid, a 100% volunteer-based non-profit whose mission is to raise and distribute funds to help children fighting cancer. STK was created by Nicholas “The Kid” Wolber who lost his battle to cancer. The charity is dedicated to realizing Nick’s dream of helping kids with cancer and defeating this insidious disease.
$100 of each $220 buy-in to this unlimited re-entry tournament will go directly to Support the Kid to help Nick’s great cause. There will be a $1,000 cash bonus to the player who re-enters the most times before registration closes. The chip leader at that time will also receive a $1,000 cash prize, so be ready to gamble!
I’ll even make a special offer to anyone who reads this blog and is interested in my poker coaching services: If you come play the CSOP event this Saturday, January 28 at Borgata I’ll give you a free 1-hour introductory lesson.
We expect to see a lot of the Charity Series of Poker’s friends and supporters in the tournament including big-name pros, poker fans, and plenty of stars from outside the poker world. We hope you can make it out and help us push the donations higher throughout the evening!
