The $3 Million Guaranteed Borgata Poker Open Championship, which kicked off Sunday, September 14, continues to make its mark in World Poker Tour history attracting the third largest field ever for a WPT event.
The final entries came in at 1,226, beating last year’s Borgata Poker Open Championship field of 1,189 entries. That puts the prize pool at about $4 million, easily outdistancing the guarantee.
Play in Day 2 is underway and you can follow all the action live at our tournament blog.
The 2014 Borgata Poker Open has started out with another amazing turn-out for its opening event as 4,158 entries were made in Event 1 to start two and a half weeks of tournament action.
That’s better than $2 million on the line for one event and millions more spread over 50 events from September 2 to September 19, including the $3 million guaranteed WPT Borgata Open Championship starting September 14.
But even with thousands of grinders vying for all that cash, there’s one thing poker players are always ready to do—and that’s give a little back to the community.
So this year’s Borgata Poker Open features two charity events with one honoring a long-time friend of Borgata Poker—and the poker world in general—and the other from the newly formed Charity Series of Poker.
Event 14, September 12, is the inaugural Mike Sica Memorial Seniors Tournament to benefit the American Cancer Society.
Sica passed away in November at age 69 from cancer. A WSOP Bracelet holder and a fixture at Borgata poker events, Sica was an East Coast pro known for his big heart, easy smile, trademark coordinated outfits and ever-present container of toothpicks.
At this point, the Borgata Poker Open, scheduled for September 2 – 19, doesn’t need all that much of a publicity push.
If you play live poker, you know what the Borgata Poker Open is. It’s simply the biggest poker event on the East Coast, a record setter for the World Poker Tour and one of the most anticipated two and half weeks of poker anywhere.
For grinders, it’s really all about scheduling the tournaments you want to play.
Online registration is open for all main events, so let’s look at that schedule.
The Open begins September 2 with Event 1, a $2 million guaranteed, $500 + $60 opening event that includes five opening sessions split between September 2 – 4. The first event of the Borgata Poker Open is always the most well attended and the Borgata Poker Room has been adding opening sessions to accommodate the huge field for the last few years.
It’s August, the last of the full summer months, and the Borgata Poker Room is playing out the dog days with a new line-up of poker promotions.
First, Borgata introduces its new Splash the Pot promotion on Tuesdays throughout the month. Two qualifying tables will be selected every 30 minutes to receive $100 for the pot from 11:30AM – 4:00PM. A total of $2,000 will be awarded each Tuesday to 20 randomly selected tables.
So basically, you’re sitting at a table playing in a Bad Beat Jackpot qualifying Cash Game and one of our poker room staff just comes over and throws $100 in the pot. And this happens around the room 20 times each Tuesday afternoon.
Plus, we’re bringing back our popular Borgata Buffet offer. For every five Borgata Poker tournaments you enter, from August 1-31 you will receive a complimentary Borgata Buffet.
August is fast approaching and the Borgata Poker Room, along with BorgataPoker.com, has put together one of the best months of tournament play in a non-Borgata Open month.
By non-Borgata Open month, we mean a month that doesn’t include one of Borgata’s five seasonal open events such as the Borgata Poker Open scheduled for September 2-19.
Grinders getting ready for that event will have plenty of chances to sharpen their tournament skills in August.
First up are a series of summer tournaments on Sundays, which we’ve cleverly dubbed Sundays in August. A mix of four different tournaments will be offered at noon each Sunday during the month.
It’s only one of the most classic card games ever and the Borgata Poker Room remains the leading poker room in Atlantic City.
Add to that the Borgata Poker Room’s daily poker tournaments and 24/7 live cash games, there’s always a poker seat open for would-be players.
But, that hardly scratches the surface of the poker action at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa. You see, what is a live game against other players in the Borgata Poker Room is also a table game on the casino floor and a host of video poker options in the slots areas of Borgata.
Borgata offers more than 20 different variations of video poker. Borgata also offers Four-Card Poker, Flop Poker, Bonus Poker, Pai Gow Poker, Caribbean Stud Poker, Texas Hold’em and Let It Ride as well as our newest entry, Three-Card Poker.
Ok, so that’s a lot of poker options to choose from, so here’s a plug for the quick action and huge bonus payouts of Three-Card Poker.
Like most poker table games, it’s all in how you bet as you can play against the dealer, play for bonus payouts on hands or play for a big money six-card jackpot with a top prize of $1 million.
Yes, a six-card jackpot in a three-card hand with a top jackpot of $1 million.
Coming right off Borgata Poker’s Deepstacks Challenge - currently underway (July 7-20) – comes the $150,000 guaranteed PocketFives Poker Tournament July 27 to July 29 in the Borgata Poker Room.
PocketFives.com is an online poker forum and news site and one of the best poker info sites in the country. PocketFives is partnering with Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa to offer up a $350 + $50 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em Tournament with opening days July 27 and again July 28. The tournament carries a $150,000 prize pool guarantee.
“I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to present an event like this for our members,” said PocketFives co-founder Adam Small. “As the market leading casino property in Atlantic City, Borgata is the perfect place for us to host a live poker tournament. The PocketFives New Jersey community has been incredible since the launch of internet gaming and this event, along with the party, will be a great way to show our appreciation and give back to them.”
We know that you don’t necessarily live your entire poker world online. Sure, our $10K nightly and $50K weekly tournaments are big draws, but so is the incredible land-based action at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City. This month, we’re excited to combine online thrills and live-action adrenaline rushes to bring you Deepstacks Challenge and the $150K PocketFives Open.
Deepstacks Challenge Satellites Now Running
How deep are you willing to go to pocket your share of $50,000? With the Deepstacks Challenge satellite series, you won’t need to reach deep into your pockets at all. From now until July 10th, we’re running satellites for seats in the Deepstacks Challenge $50,000 Guaranteed tournament, set to get underway at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa on July 12th. Each satellite takes place nightly at 8pm and guarantees to pay out at least one seat in the live tournament.
When Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa promises grinders a Bad Beat Jackpot Frenzy, we aren’t kidding around.
Take the action on Wednesday, July 2, when Borgata’s Small Bad Beat Jackpot hit twice—in five minutes. That’s right, better than $95,000 paid out in just five minutes.
The first hit came in the Borgata Poker Room at 3:30pm in a hand that really proves how Borgata’s Bad Beat Frenzy—which lowers the minimum hand to win the small jackpot—has changed the landscape.
Player Steven Belly was holding pocket 10’s while Jasper Chan was sitting on pocket jacks. Then came a flop of three aces, giving each a full boat.
Belly’s lesser boat wins the Small Bad Beat Jackpot and $20K and Chan Took home 10K. Eight other players at the table get $2,500 each.
Borgata poker players have been left with an interesting choice since BorgataPoker.com went live last November.
Do I get dressed, hit the Borgata Poker Room and stare down the guys I’m going to be winning from? Or, do I just relax at home, order in some pizza and play online all night and stare down some avatars?
Well, here’s a chance at the best of both Borgata poker worlds. Introducing the Borgata Poker Deep Stacks Challenge, which combines live play in the Borgata Poker Room with online play at BorgataPoker.com.
Borgata is also bringing back the Leaderboard Promotion, new and improved. Players have a shot at a free $3,500 value seat to the Borgata Poker Open Championship in September to the leaderboard winner. The series includes 14 different tournaments from July 7 to July 20.
