28 West and Samuel Adams Present Beer and Bites August 16

August 13, 2014 by Ryan Ross Leave a Comment

Samuel Adams was an American patriot and founding father known for his part in organizing the Boston Tea Party in which American revolutionaries dumped tons of British tea into Boston Harbor and replaced it with Summer Ale and Boston Lager. Then, a great time was had by all.

Ha, ha. Just a little humor at the Borgata Blog. Really, they replaced it with Samuel Adams new Rebel IPA craft beer.

Kidding again, there was no beer at the Boston Tea Party (well, at least none anyone will admit to), but Samuel Adams was the inspiration for Samuel Adams Brewery, which has quickly become one of the most successful craft beer brewers in the U.S.

And Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa is hooking up with Samuel Adams Brewery at 28 West this Saturday, August 16 for a special Beer and Bites tasting event.

Ok, that may have been a long way to go to highlight another great Borgata food and beer pairings event, but Samuel Adams connection to history just brings it out of us.

In 1984, Jim Koch actually revived a 150-year-old family tradition when he founded Samuel Adams Brewery—in part choosing the name because the Samuel Adams had actually been a brewer himself.

But this new Samuel Adams Brewery was also as revolutionary as its namesake by re-introducing craft beers—code for beers that have a lot of actual flavor—back into the U.S market place.

Up until then, American’s love for pale lagers gave us a lot of choices of mass-produced beers that went well with a cheeseburger, but for a true matching of beer and fine dining, there wasn’t much for Americans to choose from.

Samuel Adams fixed all that and allowed for some tasty options such as those that will be offered at the 28 West event.

Just check this menu out.

Samuel Adams Whitewater IPA (India Pale Ale) served with yellow beet salad, cherry compote and fried goat cheese.Beer

Samuel Adams White Lantern served with little neck clams, fennel & orange and grilled sourdough bread.

Samuel Adams Irish Red served with mesquite grilled skirt steak and crispy potato cake.

This menu is especially appropriate because right after the Boston Tea Party, the patriots had fried goat cheese sandwiches on sourdough bread with fennel & orange.

Ha, ha, just kidding again. They probably had cheeseburgers.

If only they could have experienced a true 28 West wine and beer pairing event at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa like we lucky patriots can. And you don’t even have to lift up any heavy crates of tea.

Tickets for the event are $39 and are available here.

2014 Borgata Poker Open Schedule

August 12, 2014 by Becky Grimm Leave a Comment

Borgata Poker OpenAt this point, the Borgata Poker Open, scheduled for September 2 – 19, doesn’t need all that much of a publicity push.

If you play live poker, you know what the Borgata Poker Open is. It’s simply the biggest poker event on the East Coast, a record setter for the World Poker Tour and one of the most anticipated two and half weeks of poker anywhere.

For grinders, it’s really all about scheduling the tournaments you want to play.

Online registration is open for all main events, so let’s look at that schedule.

The Open begins September 2 with Event 1, a $2 million guaranteed, $500 + $60 opening event that includes five opening sessions split between September 2 – 4. The first event of the Borgata Poker Open is always the most well attended and the Borgata Poker Room has been adding opening sessions to accommodate the huge field for the last few years.

The opening event in 2013 brought out a record 3,871 entries, so you see what we mean.

Of course, the big event of the tournament is the $3 million guaranteed World Poker Tour Borgata Open Championship from September 14 – 19. The $3,300 + $200 event has two opening days, September 14 and 15 respectively. The Borgata Open Championship has historically hosted the biggest fields ever on the World Poker Tour.

In all, the Borgata Poker Open will offer 24 main events and 26 secondary evening tournaments and satellites. Along with the guarantees on the opening event and championship, eight other events carry more than $1.5 million in guarantees combined.

Of particular note is Event 10, a $1 million guaranteed Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em tournament from September 8 – 12. This $350 + $50 tournament also begins with five opening sessions from September 8 – 10.

Also on the schedule are Event 8, the Borgata Open Ladies Championship, Event 14, the inaugural Mike Sica Memorial Borgata Seniors tournament and Event 19, the Charity Series of Poker tournament.

Check out the full schedule—with structures—for the Borgata Open main events and also the schedule for secondary and qualifier tournaments.

As always, Borgata will offer a special drawing for a seat at the $3,500 buy-in Championship Event. The contest opens August 11 and runs to September 10. Click here to enter.

Get ready to pass Go in Monopoly Dream Life

August 11, 2014 by Becky Grimm Leave a Comment

Monopoly Dream LifeGet ready to pass Go in Monopoly Dream Life by IGT, BorgataCasino.com’s latest addition to our online slot game suite. Monopoly Dream Life is a hugely popular online slot with a modern twist on the classic board game that’s been around for generations.

Forget that colorful Monopoly money that isn’t worth anything in the real world. Buying and selling property in Monopoly Dream Life could lead to a real cash payday when you play for real money at BorgataCasino.com.

The game is super-easy to play. There are 20 paylines and a huge variety of symbols. Symbols of the game include the mustache sporting Monopoly man himself, the monopoly hat, dog, ship, car and the bonus symbol.  Your goal is to place your bet, spin the reels, and wait for the game to come to a stop.

While some of our slots offer variable paylines (meaning you can select between one payline and the max) Monopoly Dream Life is fixed, so you get to play all 20 paylines at once. Feel free to adjust your bet using the arrows on the Line Bet tab, located on the bottom bar.  You’ll get paid out if your symbols match up on any of the 20 paylines.

Monopoly Dream Life is extra special thanks to three bonuses designed to reward you more often.

Stacked Wild Bonus

With stacked wilds, you can win with a wild symbol on multiple parts of the reel. So, if you get four different symbols plus a wild symbol, you can up your payout because the wild symbol subs in to make the payout more lucrative.

Dream Life Bonus

The property cards take on a new twist in Monopoly Dream Life. In this bonus round, you’re invited to flip over cards to reveal a prize. Your goal is to collect four, but you have a chance to discard up to two cards along the way. The total of the numbers printed on the four property cards determines the number of free spins you’ll earn. Remember, free spins are played using the house’s money, so you’ve got the chance to win without spending a dime.

Free Fall Symbol Bonus

This one is pretty cool. When activated, symbols will drop from the top of the screen after a spin and fill any empty spaces on the board. That gives you more chances to win when you least expect to.

Monopoly Dream Life is now available to play for real money at BorgataCasino.com. Feel free to try it for free first to get a hang of the game.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Ave at Borgata Music Box August 29

August 8, 2014 by Carie York Leave a Comment

When it comes to music, everybody knows how to describe their favorite styles. And it usually just takes one simple phrase … I like jazz. I like hip hop. I like R&B and so on.

Pretty clear and everybody knows what to expect.

And then there’s funk.

Think about it. It’s kind of hard to describe funk. It’s jazz, rap, R&B, hip hop, soul and even rock all rolled up into one.

Trombone Shorty and Orleans Ave.Yet somehow, you still know what to expect—great music, especially when it comes from a hard-edged funk act like Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue.

Trombone Shorty appears August 29 at Borgata’s Music Box.

Shorty (only his friends call him Trombone … or maybe not) describes his own sound as employing hip-hop beats, rock dynamics and improvisation in a jazz tradition.

You know? Funk.

The group released its third album in fall 2013, “Say That to Say This”, co-produced by Shorty and R&B titan Raphael Saadiq. In 2010, Trombone Shorty released the Grammy-nominated “Backatown“, followed in 2011 by “For True“, which topped Billboard Magazine’s Contemporary Jazz Chart for 12 weeks.

In that short time Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue have taken the music scene by storm performing at this year’s Grammy Awards and at the White House.

Not bad for a guy who started playing in Lenny Kravitz horn section in 2005. These days, he’s the guy making headlines for replacing the stolen trombone of a 14 year-old mugging victim in his hometown of New Orleans.

And, of course for the funk. Always for the funk.

Now Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue hit the Atlantic City scene and Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, the only New Jersey stop on their current tour which has included the Newport Jazz festival (as well as a slew of other jazz festivals) and Lollapalooza. Tickets are $35 and $29.50. Get tickets here.

After all, when you’re looking for some funky trombone jazz music in your life, you can always count on Borgata.

The Borgata Nightlife Interview: DJ Ruckus

August 6, 2014 by Carie York Leave a Comment

Most of Borgata Nightlife’s resident DJ’s are in demand, but how many can claim to be the most sought after DJ in the world?

DJ RuckusOne—DJ Ruckus.

Well, at least according to GQ, which dubbed him “the most sought after DJ in the world” and it’s pretty easy to see why. DJ Ruckus plays more than 180 shows a year, is a resident DJ in nightclubs around the country including exclusive destinations in New York, Miami, Las Vegas, Atlantic City (at MIXX at Borgata) and Atlanta and has played private shows for celebrities including Adrian Brody, Christina Aguilera, Diddy, Magic Johnson and Steven Tyler.

He also provides the music at exclusive parties for corporate clients including Calvin Klein, PlayStation, Prada and Virgin and fashion shows and film premiers around the world.

It all started when he received some turntables for his 14th birthday. In just a couple of years he was headlining at some of the biggest clubs in his native Miami and playing private parties for Diddy in Morocco.

In 2010, DJ Ruckus hooked up with hip-hop pioneer Rev Run (another Borgata resident DJ) collectively joining old school and new school music and hip-hop and electronic music. The two have performed festivals around the world, but you can catch them right here at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa at MIXX nightclub Saturday, August 9.

We sought out DJ Ruckus ourselves for a quick chat about DJing and his career. Here’s what he had to say.

When did you start DJing?

October 10, 1998

What kind of equipment do you work with?

Pioneer DJM-900, Pioneer CDJ-2000s, Technics 1200 Turntables, Rane Serato, Mac Laptop, SD cards (what you’d put in a digital camera).

Where do you spin usually?

All over the world! Borgata (AC), Hakkasan (Las Vegas), Finale (New York), Mason House (London), Studio Paris (Chicago), LIV (Miami), VIP Room (France) and more.

What was your favorite party in the last year?

Neon Carnival with my cousin Zoe Kravitz and Borgata and dGi Management fam DJ Politik and DJ Kayper.

Who is your favorite DJ/Artist?

Solomun and Kayper. 2 best DJs in the game. Different styles, but both brilliant.

What are your music predictions?

I predict more electronic elements and/or arrangements continuing to be incorporated in all music styles. I also see soul and organic and analog instruments having a renaissance. The next sought after pop sound may be the 2 step dance R&B vibe that we saw in the recent Michael Jackson single “Love Never Felt So Good” or tracks “Blurred Lines” and “Get Lucky”.

Favorite Lyrics?

“Cause all of me loves all of you. Love your curves and all your edges. All your perfect imperfections.” – John Legend

Most people you ever played in front of?

60,000 at Sun Life Stadium with Cee-Lo.

First feeling of being star struck?

Quincy Jones!

The track I’ll be opening my next DJ set with:

A new track I just finished with Maestro Harrell and Jermaine Dupri!

The track I always play to rescue a dance floor:

Michael Jackson – Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough

The track that got me out of bed this morning:

A$AP Ferg – Work

The ideal festival track:

Martin Garrix – Tremor

The best track by my favorite new artist:

Foals – Late Night (Solomun Remix)

New Craft Beers at Vintage Wine Boutique

August 5, 2014 by Jen Jones Leave a Comment

We’ve all seen wine aficionados going through their routine as they sample their classic wines.

You know—the swirl in the glass to check the color, the sniffing of the bouquet, the swishing of the wine in the mouth to pick up its accents and flavors.

It’s one of the great joys of wine selection and part of the education Vintage Wine Boutique at The Shoppes at The Water Club has always given would-be wine connoisseurs.

As for beer drinkers, well, that’s a little different right? The main taste element is whether it’s cold; it’s hard to see the color and sniff the bouquet from a can isn’t it?

Au contraire, mon amie.

BeerAt Vintage, we take beer as seriously as we take our classic selection of wines. And so we’re introducing a new line of craft beers guaranteed to turn any beer drinker into a connoisseur of the hops. These are beers so finely crafted, they stand up to scrutiny as well as any fine wine.

Don’t believe us? How about this: a beer with a pronounced lactic, funky nose that is lively on the palate with a touch of caramel and wild cherry?

That’s Old Brun, a Flemish Red Ale.

Try another one: say a bright golden lager with subtle floral hop notes, a mild honey like sweetness, and a slight mineralty on the finish.

That’s Vollbier Helles Lager from Germany (which, by the way comes in a bottle so that minerality isn’t from the aluminum).

We could go on all day.

Indigenous pale ale with a lush and intense citrus character that has a moderately bitter, drying finish – Da Dai IPA, a pale ale from Japan.

Malty sweet, slightly burnt, and pleasantly bitter with a sweet aftertaste. Ferments after bottling and offers aromas of banana, almond and vanilla – Quaddrupel, a Dutch Ale.

In all, about a dozen new craft beers are available at Vintage to help you refine your beer palate (you didn’t even know you had a beer palate did you?) and take you into a new world of the brewer’s mastery.

So stop by for a taste of the grape, or for a taste of the hops. After all, why should wine drinkers have all the fun?

This Weekend Could Really Heat Up Your Summer

August 1, 2014 by Becky Grimm Leave a Comment

We don’t mean to spoil your weekend, but it’s August 1st and that means summer is pretty much halfway over.

The good news? That “Sizzlin Summer” feeling can last all year long with Borgata’s $100K sweepstakes. We just drew 10 weekly winners earlier this week for our latest cash draw. There’s another draw for $4,500 in cash next week, and then five more weekly draws. With each draw, the prize pool grows – all the way up to $10,000.

Cash is great, but for the ultimate summer, you want cool prizes. That’s why on Tuesday, we’re pulling names for our first monthly draw. First place wins a Sea- Doo Spark + Trailer. Second place wins a Beach House Rental. Third and fourth place get a Borgata Luxury Weekend. The prize giveaways continue until 45 winners are crowned.

Want in on the monthly draw? You need to buy entries, but put away your wallet because your cash is no good here. Instead, all it takes are those iRewards Points you’ve been collecting while playing real money poker and real money casino games at Borgata.

TVThe draw takes place on August 5th and you’ve got until Sunday to claim those entries. If you miss out, don’t worry. We’re making the summer last extra long with another draw in September for a St. Lucia holiday, a Bermuda hot tub, a Samsung 75” TV, Borgata getaways and more.

Want more info? Get all the details here.

An Evening of Motown at Borgata

August 1, 2014 by Carie York Leave a Comment

Here are some quick definitions that might be of interest to music fans as well as fans of Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa’s summer entertainment line-up.

Motown – The term refers to a record company founded in 1959 by Barry Gordy Jr. that featured some of the greatest soul music—with a distinct pop feel—ever recorded. The label was so successful in its crossover appeal, the term Motown now stands for both a style of music as well as being a nickname for Detroit itself.

“I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)” – The first #1 hit by The Four Tops, one of the founding groups on the Motown label that has a string of hits by Motown’s now legendary songwriting/production team of Holland–Dozier–Holland.

The Vandellas – One of Motown’s most successful groups under its Gordy label, especially after a singer by the name of Martha Reeves joined the group and eventually moved up to lead singer. As Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, the group has ten Top 10 hits including possibly the greatest Motown anthem of all, “Dancing in the Street.”

Dreamgirl – a nickname for members of Motown’s super group The Supremes, including founding member Mary Wilson whose autobiography “Dreamgirl: My Life as a Supreme” cemented the phrase in the American Language (not to mention The Supreme’s string of hits and Wilson’s three solo albums).

All Stars – A name used to describe the band formed around Jr. Walker (1931-1995) known as Jr. Walker & the All Stars. Now the group carries on its legacy as Jr. Walker’s All Star Band.

An Evening of Motown – Another fantastic celebration of the Motown sound (featuring all of the above named artists) appearing August 17 in The Borgata Event Center.

It’s going to be a real Motown week at Borgata with Smokey Robinson Presents: Human Nature – The Motown Show at the Borgata Music Box August 8, 9, 10, 15 & 16.

An Evening of MotownThen, on August 17 comes An Evening of Motown in the Event Center featuring The Four Tops, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Mary Wilson and Jr. Walker’s All Star Band.

The impact of the Motown sound with its mix of doo-wop, R&B, pop, blues, rock and roll and soul changed music in America and you can relive that explosion with an Evening of Motown at the Event Center. Together, the lineup presents some of the greatest songs of the 1960s from Martha Reeves and the Vandellas’ “Nowhere to Run” to the Four Tops “Reach Out I’ll Be There.”

Tickets are $75, $65 and $55 and are available here.

Motown and Borgata, is there a better way to spend a summer night?
