Calling the Clock

February 19, 2016 by Matt Stout Leave a Comment

Matt Stout“Who called the clock?”

Anyone who has played poker before has heard this question asked before, usually rhetorically.  It’s the first step in a series of disdainful comments made by a player who is offended that someone would call the clock on them.  It can lead to awkward confrontations, especially when the player who had the clock called on him just lost a big pot.

I’m here to tell you that the person who is out of line is probably the one who had the clock called on him, not the clock caller.  Although the ability to call the clock on another player, after which a player has one minute to act, has been a rule in poker for decades, it seems that in the “old days” of poker it was somewhat taboo to do so.  Well, it’s a new day, especially in tournaments where the blinds are constantly going up and there’s a lot more pressure to increase your stack than in a cash game.

Tanking has become an epidemic in poker tournaments and is very bad for the game.  Not only does it make the game more boring and less enjoyable when you have to sit through 2 to 4 minute decisions throughout 8 to 10 minute hands, but it also makes everybody at the table a little less likely to win the event.  Per-hand edges are small – the less hands you play per hour, the harder it is for you to accumulate chips and give yourself a chance to win the tournament.

Tournament directors and organizers have gone so far as to consider instituting a “shot clock” in poker tournaments and providing Tournament Directors the ability to call the clock rather than relying on players to do it.  I personally stood up at the Poker Tournament Directors’ Association’s (“TDA”) most recent summit while they discussed this idea and told them that while I appreciate their efforts, I think the onus is on us as players to speak up when someone’s tanking habits are out of line.  While I think a shot clock would combat the tanking epidemic effectively – and I initially liked the idea – I’ve realized that it would probably be bad for poker in the long run.

The first problem is that it will create difficulties in trying to get the average dealer to fairly clock every player for all actions while performing their other tasks.  The far more significant issue is that many recreational players are intimidated enough by the rules and etiquette of poker tournaments in casinos and implementing a shot clock would probably make the average person less likely to make the jump from his home game to taking a shot at the next $560 opening event at Borgata.

While I’ll obviously take the size of the bet, the size of the tournament, and the experience level of the player involved into account when considering when it’s appropriate to call the clock, I think 3 to 4 minutes is long enough to make the biggest decisions in most cases.  The average hand takes around two minutes, so when you tank for four minutes you’ve kept your table from playing two more hands that blind level … and that was only ONE decision in the hand!

The bottom line is that you should try to be reasonable in how long you take for your decisions and expect your table mates to do the same.  If they don’t, you should not be afraid to call the clock to speed things up.  Even if people make slightly worse decisions by tanking less, they are likely still going to benefit in the long run by playing more hands and maximizing their chance to accumulate and make the final table.

You should only give a person 2 to 3 minutes max before you call the clock the first time, and if the decision is a trivial one or the player is a habitual tanker, you should give them less and less time before you call the clock.  While the TDA rules which govern most poker tournaments specify that players should be given a “reasonable” amount of time for decisions, they also allow tournament directors to give less than one minute to act to habitual tankers.  Most tournament directors agree that the game needs to speed up, but the power is in OUR hands.  Use it!

Celebrate Leap Day, February 29 at Borgata

February 19, 2016 by Brian Burke Leave a Comment

So, what are you doing Monday, February 29?

Yes folks, 2016 is another Leap Year meaning an extra day is tacked onto February, the shortest month of the year, to make up for the about six extra hours the Earth takes to get around the sun each year (six hours every four years makes up an extra day).

And so, a lot of whacky traditions have sprung up around the day, not including people who are born on Leap Day walking around saying, “Ha, ha, today’s my sixth birthday.”

Traditions such as in Ireland and Britain where women get to propose marriage to men. We in the U.S. picked up the tradition and called it Sadie Hawkins Day.

And then there’s, uhm, well, some other traditions include, uhm.

Ok that’s about it. And really, in the 21st century who is going to keep women from asking men to marry them whenever they want?

Leap DayYou know what Leap Days really needs? Some more traditions. Luckily we at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa are ready to fill the need.

How about a tradition of a quick getaway to Borgata complete with deals on our classic rooms in Borgata’s Leap Day package which includes:

“LEAP DAY AT BORGATA” HOTEL PACKAGE

Starting from $229, this package is valid on Monday, February 29 only and includes:

  • Overnight stay in a Classic Room at Borgata
  • Spa Toccare Mini Massage (30 min) & Facial (30min)
  • 2 Drinks at Long Bar or B Bar
  • 2 Comedy Club Tickets.

CALL 609.317.7555

Or how about a new tradition of playing in a $100,000 slot tournament?

Or making Leap Day a spa day with special deals at Borgata’s Spa Toccare and The Salon? We’ll even throw in special deals at Borgata Shops and $2.29 draft beer at Long Bar and B Bar.

And if February 29 is your birthday, you can top it all off with a free cupcake at Borgata Baking Co. or a complementary buffet at Borgata’s Buffet.

You can get all the details for Borgata’s Leap Day specials at our special webpage we call the “all the details to Borgata’s Leap Days specials webpage.”

Look, we all get an extra day this year. Borgata lets you get the most from it.

‘Caddy Shack’ Slot Comes to Borgata

February 17, 2016 by Becky Grimm Leave a Comment

Caddyshack Slot MachineLet’s take a second and think about the concept of something being classic. You know, something everyone appreciates, everyone knows and everyone can quote.

For example, if you read the lines “He’s a Cinderella story. A former assistant groundskeeper about to become the Masters champion. It looks like a mirac… It’s in the hole! It’s in the hole! It’s in the hole!”

Instantly you see Bill Murray smashing some kind of puffy flowers.

Or say you hear “This is your wife, huh? A lovely lady. Hey baby, you must’ve been something before electricity.”

Rodney Dangerfield in a really loud sports jacket comes instantly to mind.

That’s what happens when a film like 1980’s “Caddyshack” becomes a classic, which the film did probably starting in 1981. Well, we here at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa know a classic when we see one and so do the folks at WMS Games who have converted arguably the funniest sports movie of all time into an ultra-cool slot machine now available at Borgata.

Whether it’s a ground hog dancing to Kenny Loggins, Ted Knight’s boat meeting Dangerfield’s anchor or an exploding golf course, CaddyShack provides the perfect imagery for a Borgata slot machine.

Check out these bonus features:

Caddyshack Slot MachineTHE BEST GAME OF MY LIFE BONUS – 3 scattered Bonus symbols trigger this feature. Players are awarded 1 initial spin and keep getting spins until a losing spin occurs! At the end of the feature a multiplier of 2x, 3x, or 20x is awarded.

CINDERELLA OUTTA NOWHERE BONUS – 3 scattered Bonus symbols trigger this feature. Players play until they get a winning spin! At the end of the feature a multiplier ranging from 2x to 50x is awarded!

I’M ALRIGHT FREE SPINS BONUS – 3 or 4 scattered Bonus symbols trigger this feature. Players are awarded 8 Free Spins! During the feature 3 scattered Bonus symbols award an additional 8 spins! 4 scattered Bonus symbols on 1 spin award 8 additional Free Spins and 1 Bonus symbol is collected. 3 collected Bonus symbols trigger any one of the other bonuses!

IMPROVE YOUR LIE BONUS – 3 scattered Bonus symbols trigger this feature. Players are awarded 1 initial spin and if 1 or more Wild Golf Ball or Wild Gopher symbols appear, an additional spin is awarded! On any spin with no Wild Golf Ball or Wild Gopher, 1 Wild Golf Ball symbol may fall onto the reels in a random position!

GOPHER’S WILDS BONUS – 3 scattered Bonus symbols trigger this feature. Players are awarded 1 spin with 3 to 9 Wild Golf Ball symbols randomly appearing on the reels!

NA-NA-NA-NA BONUS – 3 scattered Bonus symbols trigger this feature. Players are awarded 1 spin with 3 to 9 Wild Golf Ball symbols randomly appearing on the reels!

ZINGERS BONUS – 3 scattered Bonus symbols trigger this feature. Players are awarded 2 to 5 credit awards ranging from 20 to 500 credits each! Instead of the last credit award, a 2x multiplier may be awarded!

Every one of those features recalls a classic scene from a classic movie (and that’s just the family friendly ones). In 1980, you couldn’t get a much funnier cast than Chevy Chase, Murray, Dangerfield and Knight. In 2016, you couldn’t get a more classically funny slot machine than Caddyshack.

And just remember: “It’s easy to grin when your ship comes in and you’ve got the stock market beat. But the man worthwhile is the man who can smile when his shorts are too tight in the seat.”

An Evening With Sophia Loren at Borgata’s Event Center March 11

February 16, 2016 by Carie York Leave a Comment

If you could pick one person in history to spend an evening talking with, who would you pick? Einstein, Churchill, Martin Luther King?

Now let’s refine the game. If you could speak to one Hollywood legend, who would it be? Cagney, Bogart, Orson Welles?

One last question, if you could speak to one acting legend and the sexiest, most exotic creature to ever grace a cinema screen, who would it be?

Sophia LorenThere’s only one answer – Sophia Loren. The first two questions were a fantasy, but thanks to Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, an evening with Sophia Loren can be very real as she comes to Borgata’s Event Center for an intimate onstage conversation and Q&A.

That’s right, the Sophia Loren, Oscar winner, international star and Hollywood legend will be on the Event Center stage answering questions about her legendary career. The appearance is part of a limited tour Loren is making in the U.S. titled “”An Evening with Sophia Loren.”

“She’s doing a small run throughout the country,” Joe Lupo, Borgata’s senior vice president of operations recently told Atlantic City Weekly. “We’re very fortunate to have her, and we’re really looking forward to this event.”

Who wouldn’t? Just trying to run down Loren’s better than five-decade career is like preparing a term paper on film history.

Loren’s career as an international film star started in the late ‘50s after a successful run in Italian films when she signed with Paramount pictures in 1958. Among her films at this time were “Desire Under the Elms” with Anthony Perkins, based upon the Eugene O’Neill play; “Houseboat,” a romantic comedy co-starring Cary Grant; and George Cukor’s “Heller in Pink Tights.”

But it was the European film “Two Women” in 1961 that both won Loren an Oscar—the first Best Actress Oscar ever awarded for a foreign language performance—and made her a superstar. The performance essentially allowed Loren to rule the 1960s with films such “El Cid” (1961) with Charlton Heston, “The Millionairess” (1960) with Peter Sellers, “It Started in Naples” (1960) with Clark Gable, Vittorio De Sica’s “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow “(1963) with Marcello Mastroianni, Peter Ustinov’s “Lady L” (1965) with Paul Newman, the 1966 classic “Arabesque” with Gregory Peck, and Charlie Chaplin’s final film, “A Countess from Hong Kong” (1967) with Marlon Brando.

That list of leading men alone would fill a wing of an actor’s Hall of Fame.

Her career continued into the 70s with films such as “The Voyage,”” A Special Day” and “Brass Target” Through the 80s and 90s she still popped up in films, most notably 1995’s “Grumpier Old Men” Her last film role was in 2009’s “Nine.”

But it was also in that time that Loren received the Academy Honorary Award for her contributions to world cinema and was declared “one of the world cinema’s treasures.” In 1995, she received the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award.

Like we said, she is a legend and when she appears at Borgata’s Event Center for an intimate discussion of her career, well, that will be a fantasy made real.

Tickets for “An Evening with Sophia Loren” are $69, $79 and $89 and available here.

Borgata is also offering a VIP Meet & Greet package for the ultimate fan experience including one premium price level ticket, and an exclusive Meet & Greet with Sophia Loren for $250. The VIP package is available here.

Chatting With America’s Drag Stars Sherry Vine and Pandora Boxx

February 16, 2016 by Bryan Buttler Leave a Comment

Americas Drag Stars at BorgataOn Saturday, February 20, expect a Pandora’s Boxx to be opened at Borgata’s Music Box venue: Some of America’s top drag talent will invade Atlantic City for one night only, and there will be many familiar faces on stage. Sherry Vine, Ginger Minj, Katya, and Pandora Boxx will present a special evening, aptly titled America’s Drag Stars, for Borgata audiences, and nothing is off limits. We had a chance to sit down with two of the queens, Sherry and Pandora, to get a little preview of what to expect from their performances, plus some scoop on projects they are both working on.

OUT at Borgata: How did you both get involved with this Borgata show?

Sherry Vine: My manager, David, who represents a lot of the Drag Race girls, and I, worked together. I love putting together these big events: I generally oversee and organize the whole show, hire dancers, put together the costumes, and handle a lot of the tech. It’s an ensemble show, with big opening and closing numbers that are costumed and choreographed.

Pandora Boxx: I’ve worked with Sherry many times before, and we’ve done a couple of casino gigs before, so it’s great to see them come back.

OUT at Borgata: What can we expect that night from you ladies? What’s a little preview of what we might see?

Sherry Vine: We’re going to give the audience the best, and it’s going to be so high energy and colorful with all of the girls doing all of their separate things. We’re going to get this first show at Borgata up and knock it out of the park. What’s funny is that the audience for a big drag show like this is really heterosexual. Honestly, it’s like 80% straight people. When we did casino gigs before, it would be out-of-control packed and sold out for months in advance.

Pandora Boxx: People can expect the unexpected. Everyone is going to be in for a crazy, fun show. Sherry does these amazing campy parodies, and I’m the supposed “comic relief.” Ginger and Katya are both incredible and you never know what Katya is going to do!

OUT at Borgata: Have you two ever worked with people in this cast before?

Sherry Vine: I’ve done shows with Pandora, but it’s the first time I’m working with Ginger. We’re all friends. You hear these stories about conflict in the drag community and it’s very distorted. The girls are all really cool.

Pandora Boxx: I have. I was just on a cruise with some of them and I did a show in New York with Ginger. So many times wen you do shows, you’re in and out so quickly that you don’t get to really know people.

OUT at Borgata: Sherry, tell us about the new online queer talent programming that you’re launching.

Sherry Vine: It’ll be off my YouTube channel, but we’re running it kind of like a network. There are seven series with multiple episodes each. We’ve been working on this for a year, and we have 70 pieces of content. It’s really exciting. You have to keep the wheels turning to create and get new content out there. Seven years ago, when I started with video parodies, there were, like, three other people out there who did that kind of thing, and now there are three million. My focus has got to go somewhere else and that’s why I launched the new programming.

OUT at Borgata: Pandora, what do you think of the cast on the new season of Drag Race? Why do you think that show has such a strong following?

Pandora Boxx: I think it’s great. I watched all of the “Meet the Queens” videos. Usually there’s at least a few of them where I’m like, “Uh, girl, calm down,” but I honestly like all of them this year. I think drag always had a strong following, but unless people went to a drag show, it was sort of underground. Drag Race capitalized on all of that, and Ru is the first queen to go mainstream. It’s a little bit caddy and it’s like having Halloween every week. That’s why people resonate with it. It doesn’t take itself too seriously.
