Charity Series of Poker at Borgata

February 12, 2016 by Matt Stout Leave a Comment

Matt StoutOn January 30th, 2016 the Borgata hosted their second Charity Series of Poker (CSOP) event and the CSOP’s sixth event overall.  The tournament drew 105 entries which generated a prize pool of $18,370 and, more importantly, raised a grand total of $13,275 for Habitat for Humanity of Atlantic County and Community FoodBank of New Jersey. That’s a 74% increase over the $7,638 we raised for the same charities at our first CSOP Borgata event!

The CSOP would like to thank The Doc’s Place restaurant, ProCaliber Poker, and Great Shot Golf for their generous support along with the featured pros and celebrities who took the time to promote and attend the event.  We were joined by film critic and Good Day Chicago host Richard Roeper, WSOP bracelet winners Jeff Madsen and Vanessa Selbst, 3-time WPT champion Anthony Zinno, One Drop champion Tony Gregg, and 2015 Borgata WPT champion Asher Conniff. We’d also like to thank all of the other players who came out for an evening of poker for a good cause and of course Borgata for agreeing to host the event as well as making their own donation to the charities!

Recent November Niner and fedora aficionado Neil Blumenfield earned a $1,000 bonus for holding the chip lead when registration closed and Borgata favorite Esther Taylor-Brady grabbed the other $1,000 bonus for the most re-entries. New Jersey poker pro Jamie Kerstetter was the last player to arrive but was also the last player standing and earned a CSOP Borgata title!  She picked the first place prize of $5,512, the glass Borgata trophy, and a $500 gift certificate from ProCaliber Poker.

  • 1st place: – Jamie Kerstetter $5,512
  • 2nd place – Neil Blumenfield $3,031
  • 3rd Place – Matthew Stout $1,745
  • 4th Place – Raviteja Kondrakunta $1,470
  • 5th Place – Ranson Nelson $1,102
  • 6th Place – Anthony Derasmo $919
  • 7th Place – David Wheeler $735
  • 8th Place – Robert Raphael $551
  • 9th Place – Jorge Stella $413

Missed the event, but want to support the charities?  Click the links below to view the charities’ donations pages.

Habitat for Humanity of Atlantic County
Habitat for Humanity’s vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. They strive to achieve this vision by using donated materials and labor to build new homes and repair existing ones. Then they help hard-working but low-paid families who donate 250+ hours of work on Habitat homes get mortgages on their new affordable homes.

Community FoodBank of New Jersey
The Community FoodBank of New Jersey is a member of Feeding America, the largest domestic hunger relief organization. They provide more than 40 million pounds of food annually to over 1,000 non-profit programs including emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, senior feeding programs, shelters, and after school programs.

The Isley Brothers at Borgata’s Event Center March 12

February 11, 2016 by Carie York Leave a Comment

Songs in movies have a way of marking the times of people’s life, or more precisely, the great parties of people’s lives.

For anyone who can remember the 70s—if you can, you probably weren’t at too many parties though—you may vaguely recall dancing to the song “Shout” about a thousand times, which if course came from Otis Day and the Knights in the film  “Animal House.”

Well, actually no. “Shout” was a 1959 release from The Isley Brothers. Otis Day was a made up band.

Or maybe you remember in the 80s dancing along with Ferris Beuller to the Beatles “Twist and Shout.” Well, again it was an Isley Brothers hit first, though in fairness they covered the song as well, which was originally recorded by the Top Notes.

Or maybe, back in the 70s again, you just danced to “Who’s That Lady,” another Isley Brothers smash.

The Isley BrothersThe point is, you’ve been partying to The Isley Brothers a lot longer than you realize and on March 12 you can do it in person when The Isley Brothers Featuring Ron and Ernie Isley appear at Borgata’s Event Center with special guests The Manhattans featuring Gerald Alston & Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes.

As allmusic.com puts it, first formed in the early ’50s, The Isley Brothers have enjoyed one of the longest, most influential, and most diverse careers in the pantheon of popular music — over the course of nearly a half century of performing, the group’s distinguished history spanned not only two generations of Isley siblings but also massive cultural shifts which heralded their music’s transformation from gritty R&B to Motown soul to blistering funk.

And consider this little piece of trivia to prove how influential The Isley Brothers have been:

During a 1964 tour, they recruited a young guitarist named Jimmy James to play in their backing band; James — who later shot to fame under his given name, Jimi Hendrix — made his first recordings with the Isleys, including the single “Testify,” issued on the brothers’ own T-Neck label.

Original member Ronald Isley and younger brother Ernie Isley now carry on the tradition started by the Cincinnati-based group more than 50 years ago. And yet again, Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa brings a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted band in to play the Event Center.

Performing with them are The Manhattans—best known for their million-selling songs 1976’s “Kiss and Say Goodbye” and 1980’s “Shining Star”—and Philadelphia Soul legends Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.

Trust us, it’s going to be a party to remember.

Tickets for The Isley Brothers with special guests The Manhattans & Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes March 12 at 8pm in Borgata’s Event Center are $45, $55, $65 and $85 and available here.

The World Tour

February 11, 2016 by Asher Conniff aka misclick Leave a Comment

I really wish I had more to report from WSOP 2015, I really do. I wish I had epic stories of success and swings and high stakes action.

The truth of the matter, however, is I had a fairly irrelevant summer, poker-wise.  I cashed in just enough events to not take a financial bath while I was out in Las Vegas, and I also played less than I had in previous years due to the freedom afforded me by my Borgata wins.  The definite highlight of my summer was watching my close friend Justin Liberto win the $2500 6-Max for his first bracelet!  As you could imagine, we had a good time afterwards!

World Poker TourShortly thereafter, I made my first-ever trip to Europe.  My first stop was in Berlin, for WSOP Europe.  I had a great time there, cashing three events and making my first ever WSOP final table.  After two summers of relative disappointment at the WSOP, it was nice to have a good showing, even if it was in Europe!  Also, Berlin is a phenomenal city.  I was able to check out their annual Festival of Lights while I was there, which is something you have to see to understand the beauty of – I’ve attached pictures of the event to give you an idea.

World Poker TourAfter that, it was off to Malta for EPT Malta, where I had a very interesting experience.  On one hand, the poker was as tough as anywhere.  See, there aren’t many, if any, non-professional poker players in Malta.  That meant that every event was littered with traveling or local pros, all of whom are there to fight for every pot!  To give you an idea of the talent level, one table I played at in a 6-Max event consisted of myself, Mike “Timex” McDonald, Steve O’Dwyer, Ike Haxton, Sam Greenwood and Hac Dang (top online pro)!  You know what they say about not being able to spot the fish … While I loved and relished the challenge, it did make me yearn for the good ol’ USA!

World Poker TourOn the other hand, the country of Malta is absolutely breathtaking.  The sights and sounds are awesome, and the people are just so relaxed and happy.  The weather was beautiful every day, and Malta is surrounded by water. I could easily live there for a short time, as I absolutely fell in love with Malta.

After my visit to Malta, I was off for two days in Madrid visiting an old, dear friend.  That was followed by a two-day stopover in London on my way back to the States, where I’m ashamed to admit I spent most of those 48 hours catching up on my sleep.  But in fairness, by this point in my trip I was ready for American soil!

I’m so grateful for all the opportunities poker has afforded me in life, and I’m happy and excited to share these experiences with others, both in reality as well as through this blog.  Next time, I’ll finish up the remainder of 2015, as well as my plans, goals, and ideas for 2016 and beyond!

Best of Luck,

Asher Conniff

Let’s Get It On: 8 Reasons to Make Borgata Your Valentine’s Day Gaycation

February 9, 2016 by Bryan Buttler Leave a Comment

valentines day at borgataIf you’re sick and tired of giving (and receiving) the same old roses and boxes of chocolate for Valentine’s Day, Borgata has plenty of unique alternatives to spice up your gift giving this February 14th. From special spa treatments to comfortable rooms to amazing eats, there’s something for every love bird on your list. We hand-picked eight signature Borgata experiences that will surely “wow” your significant other, or, if you’re single why not give yourself a little pampering?

Get a Room…Literally: No visit to Borgata would be complete without a stay in one of their clean, comfortable, and modern guest rooms. The entire hotel tower at Borgata was recently remodeled, and if you’re looking for a more “zen” experience, check out one of the deluxe rooms at The Water Club, where you’ll be able to relax and unwind with the one you love.

Work the Knots Out Of Your Relationship: Spa Toccare and Immersion Spa are offering a special “Forget Me KNOTS Massages for Two” exclusively during the month of February. Designed to get rid of the winter’s blah, the side-by-side Swedish massages include free parking and a treat for your sweet tooth.

Warm Up With Brandi Carlile: The out singer-songwriter, who recently released her newest album, The Firewatcher’s Daughter, will be bringing her signature country/alternative stylings to Borgata just in time for Valentine’s Day on February 12. It’s the perfect mid-winter warm-up.

Have Bobby Flay Cook For You: Well, it’s not quite the Iron Chef himself, but the dishes at Borgata’s gorgeous restaurant Bobby Flay Steak all receive Mr. Flay’s signature touches. Don’t miss the Lobster-Crab Cake, the Filet Mignon Louisiana, and the Cauliflower Goat Cheese Gratin. Make sure to wash it down with Applejack Old Fashioned.

Get Dapper: If you’re looking to impress, stop by the Hugo Boss store, located at The Shoppes at The Water Club, where you’ll find a full selection of suits, casual wear, and plenty of dress shirts and ties. Their expert staff will make you look like a million bucks, plus you can grab a last-minute bottle of cologne (because scent is everything)!

Stuff Your Face With Cherries and Chocolate: If the winter weather has your skin looking and feeling tired, Spa Toccare and Immersion Spa encourage you to enjoy a special “Embrace Your Face Mocha Cherry Facial” that infuses skin with Vitamins A and C. Your sweet tooth will be satisfied, and you won’t have to hit the gym.

Shake Your Groove Thing: If dancing the night away is more your style, bring your significant other to mur.mur, where some of the best DJ’s in the country will be mixing tunes all Valentine’s Day weekend, including DJ Ruckus, Thomas Gold, Jason Smith, and Vice. On select nights, there will be $5 drink specials.

Head to Japan Without Leaving New Jersey: For a truly unique experience, grab dinner at Izakaya, Chef Michael Schulson’s sensual modern restaurant. There’s plenty of sushi and sashimi on the menu, plus lots of other dishes, like their Edamame Dumplings and Kobe Beef Fried Rice. Leave room for the truly amazing Crispy Rice Sushi Roll filled with Vanilla Ice Cream.

Borgata’s February Spa Specials

February 9, 2016 by Jen Jones Leave a Comment

As we like to say when February rolls around, sweets for the sweet. And that’s the theme surrounding Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa’s February spa specials, as we present a host of relaxation treatments that employ chocolate, strawberries and brown sugar, among other sweets.

Now at this point, any Shakespearian scholars reading this are probably annoyed that we’re misquoting “sweets to the sweet” from Hamlet.

So yes, the line is from Hamlet and has nothing to do with candy and is in fact, used in a kind of depressing way within the play. (You can look it up if you must know.)

February Borgata Spa SpecialsBut we’re not about that here at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa and our spa treatments are designed to relax, re-invigorate and generally recharge you in the bleakness of winter. And, of course, with Valentine’s Day fast approaching, we’ve tailored February’s specials to couples and romance.

We’ve also put a heavy emphasis on chocolate this month, which even Shakespeare couldn’t make depressing. That’s probably why there are no famous Shakespearian quotes about chocolate. (Well, that and the fact that chocolate as we know it hadn’t really taken hold in Europe during his life.)

So we’ll turn to a great 20th Century writer—Charles M. Schultz, the creator of Charlie Brown—for a quote that sums up our February specials:

“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.”

Here’s a look at Borgata’s February Spa Specials:
