Easter Specials at Borgata Baking Co.

March 23, 2016 by Ryan Ross Leave a Comment

Borgata Baking CompanyIn honor of Easter Sunday on March 27, Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa and most definitely Borgata Baking Co. present this little primer of fun facts on Easter treats to fill out your family’s Easter baskets.

Cupcakes – A small cake designed to serve one person. First showed up in an American cookbook in 1796 titled Ye Olde American Cookbook (We made the title up).

Easter Malt Ball Cupcake – The first malted milk treats were invented in the 1870s as an infant food. But people liked it so much, everyone started eating it – especially at the movies.

Caramel Cream Egg Pop – A pretty unique Borgata Baking Co. treat.

Cannoli – An Italian pastry dessert of the Sicily region. The singular is cannolo, meaning “little tube.” But most people use the plural as in “May I have more cannoli?”

Macaron – A French sweet meringue-based confection made with egg white, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond powder or ground almond and Borgata Baking Co.’s Thaddeus DuBois’ specialty.

Bonbons – If it’s a small sweet candy, you can call it a bonbon.

Easter Basket – You throw a lot of Easter treats in a basket because it’s easier to carry. Sounds as good as any other explanation.

All of the above – This month’s March Specials at Borgata Baking Co.

For Easter, Borgata Baking Co. and Borgata Executive Pastry Chef Thaddeus DuBois have come up with an array of Easter specials that will make your family’s Easter meal the envy of all.

Check it out:

14 inch Hollow Dark or White Chocolate Easter Bunny Basket with Candy – $40

Easter Hand Decorated Sugar Cookie – $4

Half Pound of Assorted Easter bonbons – $12

Easter Bunny Face French macaron – $4.50

So what’s in your Easter basket?

Make Your Own Easter Bonbons from Borgata Chef David Krzewinski

March 21, 2016 by Ryan Ross Leave a Comment

When filling up an Easter basket, most of us tend to go with the store-bought standards – from peeps to chocolate eggs. As for our own creativity, we tend to reserve that for the hard boiled Easter Eggs and those little dye tablets.

But it doesn’t have to be that way as – with some help from Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa Executive Pastry Chef David Krzewinski – you can make your own homemade Easter bonbons to put a personal touch into your Easter baskets.

It’s simple, delicious and another gem from Savor Borgata. And we promise these bonbons will make your Easter baskets the baskets everyone is talking about it. When their mouths aren’t full, that is.

How to Make Chocolate Nutella Easter Egg Bonbons

By Executive Pastry Chef, David Krzewinski

You’ll Need:

– 1 ½ cups Coating Chocolate *You will need additional for dipping when ready to decorate. Coating chocolate comes in a variety of flavors and colors and does not require tempering like chocolate.

– 1/2 cup Nutella

– Pastry bag

– Easter Egg Candy Molds

– 6″ Lollipop Sticks

– Squeeze bottles

– Pearl Dust

– Brush

In a microwave safe bowl add:

  • 1 1/2 Cup Coating Chocolate
  • 1/2 Cup Nutella

Microwave for 30 seconds. Stir, scrape & repeat. Microwave another 30 seconds. Be careful not to burn. Stir until smooth and chocolate is melted.

Pour into pastry bag.

Next, pipe filling into each cavity. Give the mold several taps to remove any air bubbles. Place the mold in the freezer for about 5 minutes just until the filling starts to firm up. Remove from freezer,  insert lollipop sticks and place back in freezer for 30 minutes until eggs are completely set.

Melt the various coating chocolate colors of your choice using the same method used earlier (30 second increments).

2 bowls: 1 each for your base color/flavor.

Take the eggs from the freezer, add some fun colors to the base chocolate in a zigzag formation or get crazy and free form. Either way it will be a work of art!

Dip each egg into the chocolate. And then place onto parchment paper to harden. To finish, lightly brush on some pearl dust. After all, who doesn’t love an egg with a little bit of shimmer.

No time? No problem! Buy a box of them at Borgata Baking Company between March 25 – 27.

Yeah Baby, Austin Powers Slots at Borgata

March 19, 2016 by Becky Grimm Leave a Comment

Oh, behave.

It’s been a while since Mike Myers revisited his classic Austin Power trilogy—the last one being “Austin Powers in Goldmember” in 2002—and yet, you can still hear an Austin Power’s catch phrase at any moment.

You know stuff like:

“Yeah, baby, yeah.”

“Do I make you randy baby?”

“Are you kidding, baby? I put the ‘grrrr’ in swinger, baby! Yeah!”

“You know what’s remarkable? Is how much England looks in no way like Southern California.”

But we here at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa are ready to add another Austin Powers catch phrase to the language with the help of WSN Games new Austin Powers slot machine.

And that’s “Jackpot baby, yeah.”

The Austin Powers series may have been a spoof of 1960s-era spy films, but it quickly achieved its own iconic spot in film history and taught us words like “shagadelic” and “Fembots”.

And our new progressive Austin Powers slots taps the best of Powers for these amazing bonus features:

  • The credits associated with the wedge the wheel stops on are awarded. After each wheel spin another die roll is awarded until the bonus ends.

    • Beer is selectable 4 times and awards a multiplier of up to 10x, the 5th time it ends the bonus.
    • The rope may be picked an infinite amount of times and awards a credit prize.

Borgata’s Simon Poglein named to Top 40 Under 40 by AC Weekly

March 16, 2016 by Brian Burke Leave a Comment

Simon PogleinOur friends at Atlantic City Weekly name their list of The Top 40 Under 40 each year — a tribute to young executives and community leaders throughout the Atlantic City area.

And once again, Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa is proud to have had one of our brightest young executives – Simon Poglein, Director of Database Marketing for Borgata – named one of the Top 40 for 2016.

Atlantic City Weekly joined forces with the Greater Atlantic City Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) in 2005 to establish the Top 40 Under 40 — a campaign designed to recognize outstanding volunteerism, community service, cultural enhancement and exceptional work ethics in sectors of society such as business, government, education, healthcare, hospitality and others.

We think Simon embodies those ideals perfectly and are delighted to see him recognized by the community. We had a Q & A with Simon to discuss his being named to the 2016 Top 40 Under 40 List.

Tell us about your background. How did you get to where you are today?

I’m originally from a rural part of Pennsylvania, located about 45 minutes East of Pittsburgh.  My college degree, a B.S. in Communications Media, was completed at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in December 2002.  Both sides of my family, going back several generations, have traditionally vacationed at the Jersey Shore.  During one of those visits, I noticed a billboard for Borgata, advertising employment opportunities to ‘Work Someplace Different.’  I applied, and that is pretty much how my career in gaming began.  My initial position was at the My Borgata Center, followed by a subsequent move to marketing.  In 2013 I took a marketing position with Isle of Capri Casinos, where I was part of the opening team of Lady Luck Casino Nemacolin in Farmington, Pennsylvania.  Within that same year, an opportunity presented itself here at Borgata, and so I made my way back to Atlantic City.

What’s your favorite memory in your professional career at Borgata?

There are so many great memories, it’s hard to name a single favorite!  The best memories I have are from those events in which the entire team here at Borgata delivers on a truly special, one of a kind experience for our customers.  If I had to name one, Borgata’s Free Throw Basketball tournament held on March 21, 2015 was an event I will never forget.  It was the kind of day that makes working at Borgata such a unique and rewarding experience.

What are your hobbies?

In my free time, few things get me more excited than a DIY project around the house.  I take pride in being a homeowner, and customizing that space to make it my own has been awesome.  Working outside in the yard is also a great escape for me.  South Jersey has an exceptional climate for growing a variety of plants, and it’s been a labor of love trying different trees and shrubs to create my own little backyard oasis (if you can get past the greenheads, of course).

Where were you when you found out you were selected as one of the Top 40 under 40?  How did you feel/what was your reaction?

I was at my desk when I found out the news.  It was a complete surprise, I wasn’t too familiar with the Top 40 under 40 campaign, and didn’t realize I had been nominated.  After learning more about the award, I came to appreciate what an honor it is to be selected.  The award stands as validation of my commitment to my career, and to the Atlantic City region.

Who would you like to thank for what you’ve accomplished?

First and foremost I would like to thank my parents.  As an adult, I now have so much respect for what they’ve accomplished in life and appreciate all of the knowledge and values they’ve shared with me over the years.  They are truly the most dynamic people I know.  Much thanks also to my colleagues at Borgata – the guidance and support they’ve provided me has been invaluable to my career development, and I am grateful to work with such an experienced and professional team.

What do you still want to achieve?

Professionally, my number one goal is to continue to strengthen Borgata’s position as a leading destination resort.  I am truly passionate about technological innovation and process improvement when it comes to My Borgata Rewards.  There is endless opportunity to evolve and enhance the customer’s experience during each interaction with the program – from sign-up, to booking, to arrival, and redemption.  In addition to marketing, I want to continue to gain experience and insight into all facets of the casino / resort operations, and add some depth to my C.V.  On a personal level, I feel I owe it to myself to get out and travel more, to explore and discover new places and experiences.

How will you be celebrating?

For some reason I’ve had Tony’s Baltimore Grill pizza on my mind lately.  So I plan to tuck into a slice or two or three and celebrate with friends and family.

Congratulations Simon from all of us at Borgata!

Piff the Magic Dragon at Borgata’s Music Box March 19

March 15, 2016 by Carie York Leave a Comment

Piff the Magic DragonThrough the years, Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa has welcomed a lot of magicians to its performing stages. The same holds true for comedians, which have always been a staple at our entertainment venues.

When it comes to dragons, however, well, there have been very few. After all, how many dragons are there really that regularly perform stage shows? Maybe Smaug, for a time, but the dwarfs got him.

So not many.

And when it comes to performing comic magician dragons, then there’s only one.

So, it’s with great pride that we announce the return of Piff the Magic Dragon to Borgata’s Music Box for two performances March 19 at 7pm and 10pm.

The 7pm show is sold out.

Not to be confused with that other dragon who lived by the sea, Piff the Magic Dragon has made quite a name for himself by offering up one of the edgiest, and funniest magic shows to ever grace an Atlantic City stage.

And we’re not talking about a children’s magic show here.

Piff is actually UK comedian John van der Put who bills himself as “The Greatest Performing Dragon of All Time” and has appeared on Penn and Teller’s “Fool Us,” and “America’s Got Talent,” and performs an in-residence solo show regularly in Las Vegas at The Flamingo.

As Piff puts it, “imagine Larry David in a dragon suit performing jaw-dropping magic tricks and you’re on the right track. With over 12 million YouTube hits to his name Piff has performed to hundreds of thousands of people in preposterous venues such as Radio City Music Hall, the O2, London, and Sydney Opera House.

“His sidekick Mr Piffles, The World’s First Magic Performing Chihuahua has been levitated, laminated, shackled in a straitjacket and shot out of a cannon all in the name of entertainment. Just one thing: They don’t do Children’s Parties.”

We hope that clears up any confusion.

So, if you’re looking for an edgy, unconventional, whacky and very funny take on a magic show – which the Las Vegas Review Journal describes as having “just the right amount of wrong,” – then you’ll want to check out Piff the Magic Dragon March 19 at Borgata’s Music Box.

It won’t be a children’s party.

Tickets for Piff the Magic Dragon’s 10pm March 19 show at Borgata’s Music Box are $25 and available here.

AC GLBT Alliance’s Richard Helfant Schools Us On Miss’d America History

March 15, 2016 by Bryan Buttler Leave a Comment

Rich Helfant ACGLBTARichard Helfant wears quite a few hats. Besides his pivotal leadership role with the Greater Atlantic City GLBT Alliance – whose monthly mixer will take place at Borgata this Thursday, March 17th – he also is the head honcho behind a major Jersey Shore landmark: Lucy the Elephant. In his tenure with AC GLBTA, Mr. Helfant has played a critical part in continuing the extremely popular Miss’d America Pageant, a yearly celebration of drag for a good cause. However, few folks know all of the history behind the event. We sat down with Richard to talk about why the pageant has such a strong following, and learned about some new things Borgata guests can look forward to at Miss’d America 2016.

Miss’d America has a pretty long history. Can you tell us a little bit about how it started? When Miss America was first here, most of the people who worked behind the scenes were gay, from the make-up artists to the costume designers. There was Studio 6, the big gay nightclub here in town, and lots of people were coming in during the preliminary Miss America nights. It was a strong weekend for gay establishments, but the people who worked the pageant never got to see it because they were backstage. Miss’d America was formed as a fundraiser, a modest, fun thing for the people who missed the pageant. It was to mimic Miss America in every way, and the first winner got a Burger King paper crown and a bouquet of dead roses wrapped in the Atlantic City Press. However, the contest grew exponentially, and it would sell out. It became the focal point of gay life in Atlantic City, even though more than half of the audience was straight. But, when Miss America left Atlantic City, it went into hibernation.

So how did it come back? The Greater AC GLBTA was looking for a signature event to hang our hat on. We brought it back and did it at Boardwalk Hall, the original home of Miss America, but the cost of doing events there was enormous. Over the years we’ve held the event at a few properties across town, until we approached Borgata Senior Vice President Joe Lupo. He said he didn’t want to just write us a check, but wanted to put the hotel behind the check. He did that 1,000 percent. Everything the man said he did and then some. We couldn’t have been more welcomed last year at Borgata. Every single person we encountered made us feel so welcomed.

I know there’s some big news about Miss’d America moving to the larger Event Center at Borgata this year. Can you tell me a little more about why Borgata was a good fit for the contest and what they’ve been able to provide? The Event Center is a much larger capacity. You have much more room to fly things in and out. They are cutting the room in half to seat more than 1,500. It’s a better fit all together. Borgata talked the talk and they walked the walk. This is based on fact! Many places look for reasons to say no. Borgata looks for reasons to say yes.

Can you tell me about some upcoming projects or events that the AC GLBTA is organizing? We have mixers every month on the third Thursday. It’s $25 to join for the entire year, and you get free admission, or for non-members, the entrance fee is $10. Food is included and there is a cash bar and usually a door prize. It’s a great way to network and socialize during a night out. The March mixer will take place this Thursday, March 17th at Borgata inside Society Club from 5:30 to 7:30PM.

On a totally different subject, how is Lucy the Elephant doing these days? This past weekend, we had over a 100% increase in traffic. Now we just have to wait and see! During the winter, it is strictly a function of weather.

When you visit Borgata, what are some of your favorite things to experience? My biggest enjoyment is how I’m treated. From the doorman in, you’re treated like you are the most important person there. They treat me just like they’d treat the mayor or anyone else. For me, if there’s one thing, it’s the way I’m treated and the way other guests are treated from the front desk to the restaurants.

Join the Greater Atlantic City GLBT Alliance for their monthly mixer this Thursday, March 17th, inside Borgata’s Society Club – located between Fornelletto and Long Bar – from 5:30 to 7:30PM. One lucky raffle winner will receive an overnight stay on Friday, June 10th, and 2 tickets to attend Wanda Sykes’ Music Box performance. On sale announcements for the 2016 Miss’d America Pageant will be shared in the coming weeks. Follow OUT at Borgata on Facebook for more details.

Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa is a proud member of the Greater Atlantic City Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Alliance (AC GLBTA) – a private, nonprofit, membership supported organization dedicated to promoting a better economic, social, and political advocacy of GLBT and GLBT supportive businesses and citizens in the greater Atlantic City region. In addition to his role as one of the organization’s co-founders, Rich Helfant currently serves as President of the AC GLBT Alliance and Executive Producer of the Miss’d America Pageant.

REVIEW: Sophia Loren Brings a Taste of Italian Style to Borgata

March 15, 2016 by Bryan Buttler Leave a Comment

Sophia Loren at BorgataIt you paid attention in your high school Italian class, Sophia Loren made it pay off this past Friday at Borgata.

The iconic star of countless films made no qualms at her appearance at Borgata’s Event Center that she’s not only more comfortable speaking her native language, but that she loves it. In fact, there were numerous times when the red-clad Ms. Loren, 81, broke into long passages of Italian and had to be reminded by the evening’s moderator that her audience was English-speaking.

One of those moments was when Loren recalled being so poor growing up that her mother had to cook on a hot plate in a bathroom. Even though I speak absolutely no Italian, her recollection made it easy to see her genuine and captivating appeal that caught the eyes of filmmakers from an early age. In short, she’s universal.

And, oh, the stories Ms. Loren could tell: She recalled being cast opposite Deborah Kerr in the 1951 film Quo Vadis, only to be seen as an uncredited shadow in the movie. She also recalled early directors asking if she wanted a “touch of surgery” on her nose—something that she’s never had work on to this day—and made the keen observation that a good filmmaker will use the light at an angle as to not bring attention to elongated facial features.

For those looking for any juicy Hollywood gossip, there wasn’t much to be had; that would, indeed, seem to be a bit of a low blow for one of the last living icons of Hollywood’s golden age. She did speak of her husband, Carlo Ponti, who she met when she was 15 and he was 37. Audiences did discover that her work in Two Women, which earned her an Academy Award, was the first time that she felt like an actress, and that her favorite co-star (and the best kisser) was Marcello Mastroianni.

Speaking of kissing, she did have this criticism of younger Hollywood stars: They can’t kiss passionately on camera. “It’s like they are going to eat each other,” she said.

As far as those wondering how Ms. Loren stays beautiful, her answer was relatively simple: it comes from being “happy” on the inside and out.

One audience member asked what was the happiest period of Loren’s life. She quickly replied: “When I had my children.” Both of her sons, Carlo Ponti, Jr. and Edoardo Ponti, have produced Ms. Loren grandchildren. When she said this, there were shouts of “Nonna!” from the audience. In that moment, Ms. Loren lit up with a noticeable joy. If her smile was any indication, Ms. Loren’s theory on how to maintain beauty might indeed be 100% accurate.
