“How many of you have never been to a drag show?”
A shocking number of the audience members at Borgata’s Music Box raised their hands after one of the evening’s queens asked this question at Saturday’s America’s Drag Stars performance. It was the second in a series of all-star drag shows that OUT at Borgata presented, lead and curated by New York’s own Sherry Vine, featuring some of the hottest drag talent around. In short: if it was your first drag experience, you got a good taste of what to expect from a show.
Joining Sherry during this installment was the insanely popular star of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Thorgy Thor, who opened her act with a saucy rendition of Carol Channing’s “Little Jazz Baby” from Thoroughly Modern Millie. She later returned donned in an outfit inspired by Jane Fonda/Jazzercise and “worked out” to “I’m So Excited.”
Joining Thorgy was another RuPaul alumni, Phi Phi O’Hara, who shamelessly flirted with a self-identified “straight” man in the front row of the theater. Perhaps the most shocking performance of the evening was Phi Phi performing her own vocals during her second number, a rarity in the world of lip syncing “for your life.”
The most recognizable queen on the stage was the legendary Lady Bunny, who has been performing for decades. At age 53, Lady Bunny made no qualms that she is over being “politically correct,” and her act made fun of just about everything, from the Kardashians to Caitlyn Jenner to John Travolta.
Sherry kept all of the girls in order throughout the evening, and announced that she’ll be returning to Borgata in October for a special Halloween-themed show. One can only imagine what surprises she’ll think up of before the fall. Hopefully, those who lost their drag virginity at the evening’s performance will return for a second helping.
