July 26, 2016 by Brian Burke Leave a Comment

my-borgata-summer-300x250You know what’s the best thing about Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa this summer?

Staying here.

Sure, it’s nice to pop by and experience Premier Nightclub or our new Borgata Beer Garden, maybe take in a great show and have a great dinner. But instead of heading for the parking garage, the best way to follow up a night at Borgata is an overnight stay in a classic room followed by a relaxing day at Borgata’s outdoor pool.

Why the pitch? Because we want you here and we’re giving away one overnight stay to lucky winners every week from July 15 to August 24 in our “My Borgata Summer Sweepstakes.”

Each week winners will receive:

Overnight stay in a Classic Room at Borgata or Club Room at The Water Club.

Daybed at Borgata’s Outdoor Pool for up to two people.

Have we mentioned Borgata’s Outdoor Pool? It’s new for 2016, a 3,200 square foot Roman style pool surrounded by chaise lounges and cabanas exclusively for Borgata guests.

Guests can nosh on menu items created by Borgata’s Executive Chef Tom Biglan – including Watermelon Salad with Feta & Micro Greens, Smashed Brisket & Short Rib Burger, and Chipotle Chicken Caesar Wrap – while sipping on Borgata Greenhead Summer Shandy by Traveler Brewery and cocktails like the Cuban Peach, Honeydew Mimosa, and Cucumber Cooler.

Daybeds are comfortable sunbeds for 2 people. An umbrella, sunscreen, bottled water, and hydrating water spritzers are included.

How’s that for a sweepstakes?

Wait, it gets better. The winner of the overnight stay drawn August 24 gets an upgrade to:

Overnight stay in a Fiore Suite at Borgata.

Cabana bed at Borgata’s Outdoor Pool for up to four people.

Cabana beds are covered reclining sunbeds that can accommodate up to 4 people. Bottled water, hydrating water spritzers, sunscreen and a complimentary frozen fruit tray are included.

Why are we doing this? Like we said, we want you here and we can just tell you really need a nice day by the pool – who doesn’t? And don’t forget to check out, and post to #myborgatasummer.

So let us let you relax with our “My Borgata Summer Sweepstakes.” Enter here.

See you by the pool.

Concert Review: Jeff Beck and Buddy Guy Rock Borgata Event Center

July 25, 2016 by Carie York Leave a Comment

Jeff BeckFor music fans of a certain era, popular music was once dominated by one instrument above all others – the electric guitar. Sure, disco wasn’t that far removed from today’s EDM, and pop singers are always with us just like Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber are today.

But for these fans, music – real rock and roll music – comes from an electric guitar – not to mention blues and honky-tonk country music.

So it was with some nostalgia that several thousand old-school fans packed the Borgata Event Center Saturday to see two of the electric guitars most established and influential masters take the stage as blues legend Buddy Guy and rock legend Jeff Beck performed a double bill. Either one could have performed as a solo headliner, but to have both on the same bill resulted in about 2-and-a-half hours of guitar bliss – not bad for two septuagenarians.

The show started with an hour-long set by Guy who was appearing one week shy of his eightieth birthday. Considering that Guy began his career in the late 50’s, that’s a lot of shows under his belt.

For those who don’t know Buddy Guy, he is a longtime master of Chicago blues who is considered one of the most influential guitarists in history, especially for the bluesy British invasion rockers who dominated the rock charts in the 60’s and 70’s (like Jeff Beck for example). That influence got him inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

His storied career, however, doesn’t include a lot of standalone radio hits and singles – though he has put out several albums. He’s made his mark as an exciting live performer of blues standards, who, as he said during the performance, “knows how to make his guitar scream.”

Backed by his strong band, Guy filled the hour with standards such as “Hootchy Kootchy Man” (originally recorded by Muddy Waters) and his own album cut “Damn Right I Got the Blues.”  And while the songs are important, at this point, Guy is much more about the intimacy he has with his audience. Guy stopped in between songs to talk and laugh with the audience frequently, and even took a tour through the crowd at one point with guitar in hand, actually performing in the aisles and surrounded by fans.

“I can’t shake your hand right now,” he told one fan. “I’m playing.”

Put simply, it was a love affair.

Which is also why Guy has teamed with Jeff Beck, who has pointed to Guy as a major influence on his own storied career. But if Guy’s set was a celebration of “old school” blues, Beck – even at 72 – has injected some serious youth into his 90-minute set (including encores).

Namely, he’s done it with new band members singer Rosie Bones and guitar player Carmen Vandenberg, with which he’s released the recent album “Loud Hailer.” Beck, of course doesn’t sing, and leaves that to Bones and band member and blues singer Jimmy Hall. The set featured a lot of cuts from the new album, filled with passionate protest songs that recall Beck’s early days in the 60’s – new and old at once.

Bones and Vandenberg are both English, attractive and talented 20 somethings that brought a lot of energy on stage, but the show centers on Beck who is quite simply a guitar virtuoso. You don’t need a lot of visual imagery on stage when Beck is playing. It’s like watching – or in this case listening to – a magician creating amazing illusions. You quite simply can’t figure out he does it. An instrumental version of the Beatles’ “A Day in the Life” – one of Beck’s encores – proved that perfectly. You could have sworn you heard Paul McCartney singing, but it was only Beck on guitar. How’d he do that?

And there’s also something amazing about Beck’s band – which includes Rhonda Smith on bass and Jonathan Joseph on drums. Beck and Guy’s summer tour is a short two-month affair of about 10 gigs. For the band then, their Borgata appearance wasn’t show 40 of a carefully choreographed tour. They honestly looked like they were having a lot of fun, surprising each other, and of course, all basking in admiration of Beck.

There were two particular highlights of Beck’s set. One was a rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition,” which was originally recorded with Beck on guitar. The second came when Guy appeared on stage early in the set to exchange some blues licks with Beck.

Buddy Guy and Jeff Beck on stage and playing together. The Borgata Event Center has seen some great performers, but rarely two guitar gods together at the same time.

It gave you faith that there’s still a bright future ahead for guitar music.

Introducing the Mexican Fiesta Meal at Borgata’s Metropolitan

July 22, 2016 by Ryan Ross Leave a Comment

mexican-fiesta

Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa’s Metropolitan, one of our original casual dining bistros, isn’t the type of establishment that fits into a nice little restaurant genre.

It has the ambiance of a European bistro, serves contemporary and classic American dishes and has the best oyster bar you’ll find anywhere in Atlantic City.

So obviously, as you’d expect after reading that description, on Sunday evenings (after 3pm) The Metropolitan offers up a full-on Mexican Fiesta.

That’s right, The Metropolitan has gone hardcore Mexican with its latest Mexican Fiesta dinner, featuring a full course $24 Mexican meal highlighted by a Burrito Sousa Enchilada style that is roughly the size of a small Buick.

“We wanted to do something Summery,” says Jerry Urmson, assistant GM at Metro. “And so far it’s been very successful and is continuing to grow. I think people see the burrito come out and they just think they have to have one. It’s as big as your head. I look at it and I just think, Wow, now that’s a burrito!”

In fact, it’s so big, that The Metropolitan actually tops the burrito with a chicken empanada. Yes, at other restaurants, empanadas are a main course. At Metro, they garnish the main course with an empanada.

Hey. It’s a Fiesta.

Available in beef or pork, this burrito is a classic rendering of an often overly Americanized Mexican staple. Spicy, but not too hot, hearty but not too …. Well, OK, it’s a pretty full meal.

“Everything is authentic and made from scratch,” explains Chef Dakota Curran. “From the sauces to the spices and everything in between. Of course, we don’t ratchet up the heat unless specifically requested; we want a dish that appeals to everyone, so it’s not super-hot. But there is some kick to it, just enough to make you appreciate the authentic spices.”

“The secret is pretty simple, have the right person in your kitchen,” he says. “We have a chef named Isabel who has just the right touch. She’s very traditional, very old school in her approach.”

Of course, this authenticity runs through the whole Mexican Fiesta special. Here’s the full breakdown.

APPETIZER

Choice of:

Chicken Tortilla Soup

Chicken | Roasted Corn | Peppers | Onions Vegetables | Tortilla Strips

Or

Grilled Bread Salad

Heirloom Tomatoes | Hot and Mild Peppadew Peppers

Sliced Red Onion | Baby Arugula

Grilled Pita | Green Onion Vinaigrette

ENTRÉE

Burrito Suizo, Enchilada Style (choice of beef or pork)

Chicken Empanada | Refried Beans Spanish Rice | Grilled Tomatillo Salsa Guacamole | Sour Cream

DESSERT

Caramel Flan

And that’s not all.

“One thing that really enhances the Mexican Fiesta experience is our margarita special,” says Urmson. “It’s $6 for a margarita and $18 for a pitcher. I think when you combine the two, you get a really great offering for a pretty reasonable price.”

So this Sunday, why not close out your week with a truly authentic Mexican dish? After all, everyone can use a little Fiesta to end their weekend.

Trying the Classic and the New at Fornelletto

July 16, 2016 by Becky Grimm Leave a Comment

FornellettoThere’s always something comforting in the thought of combining the old and the new – especially when it comes to great restaurants like Fornelletto.

When you descend the winding staircase that creates the grotto like feel of our fine Italian restaurant, there’s a lot of the familiar to take comfort in.The Tuscan ambiance, the truly amazing wine selections and the tradition of menu selections that have been in place since the restaurant and Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa first opened.

No better dish signifies this than Fornelletto’s Veal “Osso Bucco” Ravioli.

“It’s been the signature dish here since the beginning and it’s always been one of our most popular dishes,” says Executive Chef Tom Boyle. “We sell about 300 plates a day. And it’s a very rich dish. It’s veal shank prepared osso bucco, in handmade pasta with fine herbs.’

Think about that, the pasta – like all pasta at Fornelletto’s – is handmade daily. That means in the kitchens of Fornelletto is a chef who spends all day just making veal ravioli. Veal in, pinch the pasta, next.

That’s tradition.

But the secret to this longstanding favorite is more than the fresh ravioli. First up, the dish features braised veal shank done osso bucco, a Milanese specialty where the veal shanks are braised with vegetables, white wine and broth. Then the dish is topped with a veal demi glaze and butter sauce.

“The key is the sauce, Boyle said. “It’s a demi-gloss, which just means it’s a reduction of our homemade veal stock. It’s a rich reduction and that makes it very hearty. I see people eat a whole plate and I just think ‘God bless them.’”

That’s the joy of something classic and time tested. But never let it be said that Fornelletto rests on its osso bucco laurels

For this summer Boyle has also introduced a grilled octopus dish that will make you look at octopus in a whole new light.

“It’s a very simple dish,” Boyle says. “ Its octopus tenders, cooked in olive oil with lemon and some thyme. It’s a fresh take on octopus people may not expect. We like to try things like this and give our guest something new, something that expands their palate.”

FornellettoThe key word for this dish is octopus “tenders.” These little strips of heaven have a meaty, non-seafood taste and texture and are served with sun-dried tomatoes pesto, artichoke, crispy potato, spicy Calabrese salami.

That’s the beauty of something new and exciting.

So whether you go with the classic veal ravioli, the new grilled octopus, or anything else on the Fornelletto menu (don’t forget the wine) you can be sure of one thing.

You’ll be eating comfort food – even if its brand new.

Here’s the recipes for Fornelletto’s dishes

Veal Osso Bucco Ravioli: – Braise Veal Shank, Shred add ricotta, salt and pepper, Fine herb. Stuff the pasta and boil, finish with a veal demi glaze and butter sauce.

6-7 shanks serves 10 people

Grilled Octopus: take a 6-8 lb Octopus cook in large pot, add ¼ cup olive oil, 2 sprigs thyme, 1 bay leave-cook low heat 1 ½ -2 hours.

Slice into small 1 inch pieces – take about 6 oz grilled and finish with sundried tomatoes pesto, artichoke, crispy potato, spicy Calabrese salami.

6-8lb octopus serves 8 people
