Borgata Poker has had a long history with the Cabot Creamery Co-op of hosting a charity poker tournament to raise money for the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, Southern Branch.
For this year’s Eighth Annual “Put a Bad Beat on Hunger” charity tournament, we’re incorporating the event as part of the Borgata Summer Poker Open.
Event 3 of 20 main events for the open (July 12 to July 29), the “Put a Bad Beat on Hunger” tournament is scheduled for Friday July 15 at 4pm. The tournament is a $250 + $30 + 20 buy-in, with that last $20 being donated to the Community Food Bank. In addition, the winner receives a $3,500 entry voucher into the WPT Borgata Poker Open Championship in September.
Through its first seven years, the tournament has been a great way for Borgata’s grinders to give back to the community and through the buy-in, other contributions and sponsorships the event has raised more than $200,000 for the Food Bank.
The Cabot Creamery Cooperative is based in Waitesfield, Vermont, and made up of family-owned farms that produce some of the best cheese in the country. The Co-op sponsors the “Put a Bad Beat on Hunger” tournament to help combat hunger and break the cycle of poverty for families throughout the greater South Jersey region and support the critical work done by the Community FoodBank of NJ, Southern Branch.
“We at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey are both honored and humbled to benefit from the “Put a Bad Beat on Hunger Poker Tournament,” says Richard J. Uniacke, vice president of the Southern Branch. “The support of $200,000 over the past seven tournaments has enabled us to provide more than $2,000,000 worth of food to our hungry neighbors. With 1 in 5 kids in New Jersey struggling with hunger – and more of those living in South Jersey than anywhere else in the state – it is truly wonderful to partner with the Cabot Creamery Cooperative in this way and to have so many terrific players come together for a great tournament benefitting a great cause. Words seem inadequate to convey how truly thankful we are, but thank you.”
Some of the nation’s top professional poker players such as Roy Winston, Amanda Musumeci, and Bernard Lee are scheduled to play in the tournament. Also joining the friendly fray are members of the media community such as Marilyn Russell and HughE Dillon, along with representatives from Cabot Creamery Cooperative, the Community FoodBank of New Jersey and several celebrity guests.
And as you might expect from a charity event sponsored by fantastic cheese makers, there are some perks to playing in the “Put a Bad Beat on Hunger” tournament.
“We can’t begin to thank the poker players and Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa enough for their generosity and support in making this unique event possible,” says Roberta MacDonald, senior vice president of marketing for Cabot Creamery Cooperative. “Most importantly, for every dollar we raise, the FoodBank is able to turn that into more than $10 worth of food through its amazing buying power and the generosity of countless volunteers. Cabot issues a friendly challenge to all Borgata poker fans to join us for this incredibly fun and worthwhile event. In fact, I’ll even send an amazing gift basket of Cabot Cheddar to anyone who knocks me out of the Bad Beat. Good luck with that.”
That’s not even mentioning the usual spread of cheese and snacks made available to players.
Sweetest of all, the winner gets – along with the prize pool – a Bad Beat Champion Trophy from Borgata as well as a $3,500 entry voucher into the WPT Borgata Poker Open Championship in September 2016 courtesy of Cabot Creamery Cooperative.
In the past, the “Put a Bad Beat on Hunger” event was offered as a stand-alone tournament held in August, but now joins the full force of events for the Borgata Summer Poker Open which also includes:
