Before and After: Borgata Team Members Shave Heads for Childhood Cancer

April 30, 2018 by Brian Burke Leave a Comment

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest private funder of children’s cancer research, hosted one of its signature head-shaving events at The Barbershop at Borgata’s Spa Toccare on April 27 where team members, guests, and friends shaved their heads to raise money for lifesaving childhood cancer research.

Every 2 minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer worldwide, and in the U.S. one in five kids diagnosed won’t survive. Those who do survive often suffer long-term effects from treatments too harsh for their developing bodies. As the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants, St. Baldrick’s is leading the charge to take childhood back from cancer. From its beginnings, St. Baldrick’s has believed that kids deserve the chance to be kids – fun-loving, carefree, refreshingly honest, and always a little goofy – and deserve the chance at a healthy future. That’s why donations raised at events like this have made it possible for St. Baldrick’s to fund more than $232 million to support the best childhood cancer research, wherever it takes place.

We chatted with some of the Borgata team members who took the plunge to “go bald”…and why they did it!

Khoi Bui — Front Desk Manager

Has cancer ever impacted you, your family, or your friends?  Cancer runs in my family and my mother is the first to survive it. She was diagnosed with leukemia when I was 13 years old.

Why did you decide to shave your head for St. Baldricks?  I decided to shave my head for St. Baldrick’s because I want to show my support to those who are effected by cancer.

What’s the one thing you are most excited / apprehensive about when it comes to shaving your head?  I don’t exactly know why but I was just simply excited to show my support. I was totally ready to shave my head on the day of the event. If I was given the option to go completely bald, I would have done it.

What kind of support did you get from Borgata, your family, and your friends to participate in this St. Baldricks event? I received so much support from my family, friends, and team. When I first started, my personal goal was set at $250. I exceeded that goal after a week, so I changed it to $500. I again accomplished that goal so for one last time I set my personal goal to $750. The day before St. Baldrick’s I was at $610 so I posted a reminder on my Facebook page and reached out to some team member’s at work to ask for their support to help me reach my goal. On the day of St. Baldrick’s, I checked my page and saw that I had reached $760!

Miguel Figueroa — Customer Care Representative

Why did you decide to shave your head for St. Baldricks? What sealed the deal for me was that I can donate my hair after buzzing it. Not only would I be able to raise awareness for childhood cancer research, but knowing my hair could be made into a wig felt ultimately rewarding. Donating my hair has always been something I wanted to do. The opportunity arose and jumped to it!

Stefani Nail — Customer Care VIP Specialist

Has cancer ever impacted you, your family, or your friends?  Yes, my Grandfather died of lung cancer when I was seven. My grandmother had colon cancer when I was about ten, but thankfully she has been in remission for about 20 years now.

Why did you decide to shave your head for St. Baldricks?  While I have never personally known anyone with childhood cancer, many people that I know have lost someone close to them. Children deserve to have a carefree childhood without the worry diseases such as cancer.

What’s the one thing you are most excited / apprehensive about when it comes to shaving your head?  I’m most worried about my head being a weird shape once the hair is off!

What kind of support did you get from Borgata, your family, and your friends to participate in this St. Baldricks event?  At first my family asked if I was crazy, but everyone has been really supportive by donating and saying they think I’ll look cute without my hair.

Karen Peters – Fine Dining Group Sales Manager

Has cancer ever impacted you, your family, or your friends?  I am surrounded by family members who have had cancer:

  • All in their 80’s, three of my four grandparents died from cancer.
  • Both my father and one of my younger brothers were diagnosed with prostate cancer (approximately 15 years apart).  Dad had traditional surgery with a six week recovery time and continues to monitor his PSA counts.  My brother had a minimally invasive procedure performed by the daVinci robotic laser with one week recovery time, back to work in two weeks.  He has been told he is cancer free.  Watching my father break down and apologize to my brother for ‘his inheritance” was one of the saddest moments in my life.
  • A few years ago, my sister-in-law went to a “girl’s night out” event at a newly opened women’s radiology center where they all had apps & drinks and received a mammogram.  She was called back the next day for a second mammogram and sent for follow up with her physician.  Ultimately diagnosed with cancer in the left breast, due to the location of the cancer in proximity to her heart, course of action was a lumpectomy followed by proton therapy versus traditional radiation.  The depth of the beam is more controllable with proton therapy.  She has been told she is cancer –free.
  • My aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago.  Course of action was lumpectomy followed by radiation.  She has been told she is cancer free.
  • My husband, for years had been a heavy smoker, developed a squamous cell carcinoma on the spot where his cigarette rested on his right lower lip.  When completely excised, the tumor was 1/3 the size of his lip.  The malignant tumor was successfully removed by traditional surgery followed by reconstruction of his mouth.

Why did you decide to shave your head for St. Baldricks? Prior to Borgata partnering with St Baldrick’s, I was familiar with the Foundation, their fund-raising events and their specific emphasis on childhood cancer research.  I used to say “perhaps someday”.  Something clicked inside and told me “Now was the time.”

What’s the one thing you are most excited / apprehensive about when it comes to shaving your head?  How to keep my head and the back of my neck warm!!!

What kind of support did you get from Borgata, your family, and your friends to participate in this St. Baldricks event? Positively wonderful encouragement from my Borgata family, true family, friends and customers.

Kevin Hunt – Slot Operations Supervisor

Has cancer ever impacted you, your family, or your friends?  I do not know one person that has not had cancer impact them in some way in their life.

Why did you decide to shave your head for St. Baldricks?  I was made aware of it in my Borgata e-mail and started to talk to my family about doing this. One of my daughters, who happens to be a nurse, was familiar with St. Baldrick’s and said that they do very positive things.

What’s the one thing you are most excited / apprehensive about when it comes to shaving your head?  I am excited that we are all doing something about childhood cancer as a team. My youngest daughter said to me “Dad you are not as young as you use to be; are you sure you hair will grow back?” My wife had a comment that maybe when it comes back I will have one color no more salt and pepper. Funny people!

What kind of support did you get from Borgata, your family, and your friends to participate in this St. Baldricks event?  I have had great support from my family, friends, and Borgata and its great employees.

5 Ways to Spoil Mom at Borgata This Mother’s Day

April 23, 2018 by Brian Burke Leave a Comment

Borgata has plenty of ways to celebrate Mom this Mother’s Day, while ensuring that she has the time of her life. We decided to help those who need a little guidance in finding that perfect Mother’s Day gift by curating some great ways that you can cherish Mom at the East Coast’s premiere dining and entertainment destination.

Let Her Relax at the Spa. You’ve stressed your mom out enough. Why not let her relax in style at one of Borgata’s signature spas? Book her a special treatment, like the Shirodara at Immersion Spa, an ancient therapy used for centuries to restore an inner calm and balance to the emotions and to rejuvenate hair and scalp. Or, help her turn back time with our Hydra-Surge Facial, an enriched thermo-corrective treatment, utilizing a mask of marine extracts and organic silicon.

Take Her to Dinner with Star Chefs. Whether Mom likes sushi or spaghetti with homemade “gravy,” Borgata’s all-star line-up of world renowned restaurants has something for every taste. It’s a great time to check out Angeline by Michael Symon, Borgata’s ode to classic Italian family cuisine. Mom can enjoy Chef Michael’s soulful, playful cooking. Now that’s a Mother’s Day she won’t forget!

Entertain Her with a Show. Some of your mother’s favorites are heading to Borgata’s Event Center and Music Box, and tickets make a great gift.  AC2: An Initmate Evening with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen arrives on May 5, and Michael McDonald will play an intimate set on May 11.  Nick Swardson arrives on May 19, and ZZ Top headlines on May 25.  Book a room while you’re at it so Mom can relax before and after the show.

Borgata Gift Cards

Let Her Enjoy a Borgata Shopping Spree. For the mom who is a fashionista, Borgata’s retail shops provide fresh off the runway style, right in Atlantic City. Wow her with a jewelry gift from Antica Murrina, or with a stylish bag from Tumi. Mom can strut the runway with a gift from our brand new store, Capri, or can indulge in all things wine at Vintage: A Wine Boutique. And if shoes are her thing, she’ll find the perfect pair at Fixation.

For the Indecisive Mom… Why not get her a Borgata Gift Card? It’s the perfect way to share the Borgata experience, and it’s good for rooms, fine dining, spas, shopping and more. You can email your gift card, print it at home, or get it mailed directly to you or your mom. Let Mom choose her own Borgata gift, and maybe if you’re lucky, she’ll take you along to enjoy the fun!

Asher Conniff – Poker 2018

April 18, 2018 by Asher Conniff aka misclick Leave a Comment

Hi everybody! It’s truly been a long time since I have written one of these. Recently I’ve really been getting the writing itch, and I’m hoping this blog will be a great place to scratch that itch, while continuing to share some of my experiences!

In 2018 I plan on blogging way more than I ever have in the past.  I’ve decided to split my blog posts up into two sections: poker and lifestyle.

The poker blogs will almost exclusively focus on, well, poker(!).  Where and when I played, how it went, hands I played, and some updates on the really cool things happening at BorgataPoker.com.  For example, BorgataPoker.com is offering online satellites to amazing land-based events (i.e., Borgata Spring Poker Open with a $2700 buy-in and $1 Million guarantee; PP MILLIONS North America  with a $5,000 prize package into the $10M CAD Guaranteed event in Montreal), great tournament leaderboards (MTT, Heads Up and SNG leaderboards), monthly freerolls, deposit match and other lucrative promotions are going on right in New Jersey!

The lifestyle blogs will be more focused on things that happen around the game of poker.  The traveling, the poker world, the interactions, the tips and tricks of being a traveling professional.  I really hope these blogs both connect with and entertain you!  But before I get into 2018, let’s quickly review a recap of 2017.

It really was a year of ups and downs, of happy endings and of new beginnings.  Luckily for me, it was largely an amazing, memorable year.  I traveled all across the country doing what I love with the people I love – that really is living the dream.  Personally I had a successful year on the felt, accumulating over $200k in live tournament earnings on a fairly condensed schedule, beginning the year at the PCA, coming in 2nd in a WSOP circuit main event (we’ll just forget that I had the guy at a 3 to 1 chip disadvantage playing for $100k, a WSOP ring, a winners picture with the incredibly good looking TD of SHRPO Tony Burns, and a seat in the WSOP national championship!), and ending the year at the Borgata Fall Poker Open in November.  I truly enjoyed playing poker as much as ever with a fun, wild ride.

The coolest part of 2017 BY FAR was definitely being a part of Scott Blumstein’s amazing journey to becoming WSOP main event champion! Stay tuned to my next blog which will take a deeper dive into that RIDICULOUS experience.  But before that experience, the Summer of ’17 was pretty amazing.  I played some awesome tournaments in Las Vegas (WSOP), did some quality partying, enjoyed some of the finer legal things Vegas has to offer, and enjoyed the camp-like experience that the summer in Las Vegas has become every year.  We had a nice group of buddies all living in The Meridian, an apartment complex right off the strip, and it was really a great time, having cookouts and little pool parties, or playing basketball together (in a little indoor handball court, but whatever!).

I have embraced poker, for poker is my life in many ways.  It’s how I make my living and it means very much to me.  But I do realize that at the end of the day, poker is truly just a game.  The important things in life are the people that surround you.  I’m lucky enough to say that I have had and continue to be surrounded by an amazing group of friends, and the best, most supportive family possible.  There really isn’t a greater gift than that.

Good luck to everybody reading this!

Go Bald at Borgata to Support Childhood Cancer Research

April 17, 2018 by Brian Burke Leave a Comment

The event will be held throughout the day at The Barbershop inside Borgata’s Spa Toccare. Shavees who raise a minimum of $50 in donations may schedule their appointment any time between 9am and 8pm on April 27th. Friends and family are encouraged to attend, enjoying the spa’s facilities as well as complimentary sweets by Executive Pastry Chef Thaddeus DuBois.  In 2018, more than 6,500 people have registered to shave their heads at more than 700 events taking place across the country. So far, this year nearly $2 million has been raised to support the childhood cancer research.

Seinfeld Slots Make NJ and PA Debut at Borgata

April 16, 2018 by Becky Grimm Leave a Comment

Jerry and the gang are front and center in the brand new Seinfeld slots, and we think there will be plenty of soup for you!  The new game is jam-packed with hilarious show footage and engaging game features that celebrate this beloved sitcom “about nothing.” Seinfeld’s unique base game consists of four mini-games, each starring one of the four main characters. During the base game, the Seinfeld Feature can be randomly triggered which adds a new element, such as Jerry’s Added Wilds, Kramer’s Wild Reels, George’s Multiplier, or Elaine’s Giant Reel Sets.

Other game features include the Seinfeld Free Spins, where players can pick which characters’ games they want featured. There’s also the  “No Soup for You!” Bonus, where players pick soups and can win credit prizes and wheel spins. The Festivus Bonus lets players actually shake the Festivus pole using a gesture control element or spin a wheel for credit prizes! Lastly, in the Episode Bonus, an Episode is awarded which determines the theme of a Picking Bonus where players can win free spins, multipliers, and credit prizes.

And what an assortment of Episodes there are: players will experience scenes from “The Hamptons,” “The Marine Biologist,” “The Marble Rye,” “The Bottle Deposit,” “The Butter Shave,” and “The Conest,” to name a few.  The Episode Bonus is randomly triggered in the Seinfeld Bonus Games. The Bonus begins by awarding 3 free spins and 4 picks of 12 theme items for free spin enhancements. If a character symbol is chosen, the selected character will be the Gold symbol during the Free Spins, awarding the Gold symbol pays value. If a Gold Coffee Cup with a credit value is selected, that value will be added to the Gold Coffee pay value.

Borgata is proud to be the only casino floor in NJ and PA with this brand new Seinfeld game!  Get ready to dance like Elaine when you win big on these fun slots.
