The legendary ZZ Top is headed to Borgata on May 25. They’ll be teaming up with John Fogerty to present their “Blues & Bayous” Tour at The Event Center. Before they arrive, we found out five fun facts about the American rock band who have been entertaining audiences since 1969.
What does the name “ZZ Top” mean? It’s a fusion between B.B. King and Z.Z. Hill. Originally, the band thought of combining the two into “ZZ King”, but thought it too similar. Band member Billy Gibbons then figured that they were going to be at the top, which brought them to “ZZ Top,” the name we all know today.
Yes, Billy Gibbons plays himself on the television series Bones. Gibbons plays a fictionalized version of himself, as the father of the show’s character Angela. In fact, here’s a fun Easter egg: Angela’s middle name is “Pearly Gates”, the same as Gibbons’s guitar.
Billy isn’t the only one who has screen credits. The band has appeared in Back to the Future Part III, Two and a Half Men, King of the Hill, and WWE Raw. Their song “Sharped Dressed Man” was a theme song for Duck Dynasty, where they also appeared on the show during a retirement party episode.
ZZ Top’s most popular album was Eliminator. Released in 1983, the album has sold over 10 million copies in the United States and is diamond certified. It includes the hits “Gimmie All Your Lovin,” “Got Me Under Pressure,” and “Legs.”
They’re in the top 100-selling artists in the United States. ZZ Top has total record sales of 25 million. That includes 11 gold, seven platinum, and three multi-platinum records as of 2016, with over 50 million albums sold world wide.
