15 Things That Didn’t Exist When Borgata First Opened

June 26, 2018 by Brian Burke Leave a Comment

This summer, Borgata celebrates its 15th Birthday with a season long series of headline entertainment, one-of-a-kind culinary experiences, and plenty of special events.  It’s incredible to think that Borgata opened back in July of 2003, and it’s even more incredible to think of all of the ways that modern culture has changed over 15 years.  Think you could pull up in an Uber at Borgata’s grand opening while emailing on your iPad?  Think again.  We rounded up 15 things that didn’t exist when Borgata first opened, proof that time makes everything better!

No Bibles in Your Hotel Room: If you’ve ever opened your bedside table drawer at Borgata, you may have noticed that something was missing.  Borgata started the trend of not having Bibles in hotel rooms, something that has caught on nationwide since our decision in 2003.

Mean Girls: So fetch!  On Wednesdays, we wear pink and go to Borgata!  All of the classic one-liners from Tina Fey’s classic comedy about being personally victimized by Regina George weren’t around when our property first opened in 2003; it was 2004 when the film premiered.  Get in loser: we’re going to Old Homestead!

Hashtag: We really want you to use #Borgata15 when you come to visit us this summer, but when we first opened, you coudn’t do that.  Hashtag was coined in 2007, and became the American Dialect Society’s Word of the Year in 2012. Even if Twitter does phase the hashtag out eventually, it will live on as a concept.  #WeLoveThat

Uber: Chances are, you have relied on Uber to get from place-to-place, and it’s a super convienent and responsible way to have a great time out at one of our nightlife spots and make it home in one piece.  It may feel like the ride share service has been around for a long time, but in fact, it started back in 2009.

Photobomb: Sure, you’ve always snuck in photos before Borgata opened, but there wasn’t a word for it…until 2008!  According to Good Housekeeping, it was that year when we decided that sort of thing was socially acceptable, thanks to how easy it is to take a photo with our then-new smartphones.

“We Belong Together” by Mariah Carey: It’s a song that feels like it’s been around for a long time, but, if you thought you’d jam out to Ms. Carey’s hit tune when Borgata first opened, you’d be mistaken.  She dropped the single in 2005.

iPad: It’s made communicating and working on-the-go (or while you’re hanging out at one of Borgata’s pools) super easy, but before January 2010, it was just an idea inside of Steve Jobs’ head.  Now, iPads come in every imaginable size and color, complete with amazing cameras.  Now that’s a reason to celebrate!

The Office: Jim, Dwight, and Pam weren’t on the VIP list when Borgata first opened in 2003.  Why?  The first episode of the wildly popular (and wildly hilarious) television show aired in 2005.

Rhianna’s First Single: If you came to experience Borgata’s nightlife when we first opened in 2003, you wouldn’t have been dancing to Bad Girl Riri.  Rhianna dropped her first single, “Pon de Replay,” in 2005, launching her pop career into full throttle.

Marriage Equality: In June of 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage was a legal right.  OUT at Borgata is certainly pleased that they did.  Our unique LGBTQ program offers our guests quality and inclusive resort experiences, plus we pride ourselves on being one of the best workplaces for LGBTQ equality.

Coinlesss Slot Machines: “It’s so quiet, it’s eerie,” wrote the Las Vegas Sun after they visited Borgata in July of 2003.  Why?  It wasn’t because of the lack of customers, but rather because of the fact that Borgata introduced coinless slot machines, the first in the business!

The Notebook: Hey, girl!  Your favorite Ryan Gosslin chick flick, which feels like a classic you’d be able to pop in your old VHS, hit the big screen back in 2004, a year after Borgata opened its doors.

Instagram: Over 200 million people use Instagram on a daily basis, and there’s plenty of great spots around Borgata to take a unique Instastory.  But, it was first launched in October 2010.  It took only several months for Apple to name it iPhone’s app of the year.

YouTube: It’s become the number one way for you to waste time at work while watching videos of cute cats (and cool videos of Borgata), but it wasn’t around when the resort first opened.  In fact, the first video ever uploaded to YouTube was on April 23, 2005 (it was about the San Diego Zoo).

The Real Housewives: We’ve had quite a few Housewives come to Borgata, plus we’ve had sold-out houses for Bravo’s Andy Cohen (touring with his BFF, Anderson Cooper).  But you couldn’t tune into an episode if you checked into Borgata back in 2003.  The popular cable franchise didn’t premiere until 2006.

Halsey Brings Final Installment of hopeless fountain kingdom World Tour to Borgata

June 25, 2018 by Bryan Buttler Leave a Comment

Superstar singer Halsey announced that she is bringing the final installment of her hopeless fountain kingdom World Tour to Borgata in Atlantic City on Saturday, July 14.  The all-star performer will take to The Event Center stage starting at 8PM.  It is currently the only area stop on the tour.
hopeless fountain kingdom is the second studio album by Halsey. It was released on June 2, 2017, and peaked at number one of the US Billboard 200.  This summer, Halsey launches the final installment of her world tour, and for her North American stops, special guest Jessie Reyez will join her on stage.

This isn’t the first time that Halsey was at Borgata this year: G-Eazy had an extra special guest during his sold out Borgata Event Center show this past March. His chart-topping girlfriend, Halsey, surprised more than 2,400 people to perform an intimate duet of “Him & I,” which has reached the Top 20 charts in the United States, Australia, Canada and several other countries.G-Eazy referred to Halsey, a native of Edison, NJ, as “The Queen of New Jersey.” It’s no surprise that Halsey told the crowd that they were the best yet during this tour. Following their kiss and her exit off stage, she sat on the floor between the crowd and stage singing and dancing the entire set. The Rapper ended his show with “No Limit” before heading to Premier Nightclub at Borgata with Halsey and entourage to party and perform a few more songs. They sang an encore of “Him & I” in between dancing throughout the night.

Five Things You Didn’t Know About Sebastian Maniscalco

June 18, 2018 by Carie York Leave a Comment

Back by overwhelming demand, Sebastian Maniscalco is returning to Atlantic City this summer to do an impressive ten show run of his latest show Stay Hungry at Borgata’s Event Center this June 22 – July 1!  It’s the first time that Borgata has ever had such a residency on their property, and it’s completely sold out before Sebastian even arrives to Atlantic City!  There’s quite a few things that you might not know about the popular comedian, and we found five fun facts about the man behind the stand-up.

Sebastian Started Going to Comedy Clubs When He Was 15: In a recent interview that he gave to The Houston Press, Sebastian shares that the comic bug bit him when he was young.  “I was 15-16 going to comedy clubs, when everyone else my age was going to the basketball game at the high school,” he told the paper.  “I’d drag girls I was dating to those clubs!”

His Memoir, Stay Hungry, Came Out in February of 2018: The book features a collection of essays that traces Sebastian’s career from playing boxing rings and bowling alleys to reaching the pinnacles of comedy success. At twenty-four, he knew no one and nothing about standup comedy, but he was determined to go for it anyway. At forty-four, he’s on the Forbes’ list of highest earning comedians, sells out arenas, and has starred in four hit comedy specials.

To Get By in Los Angeles, Sebastian Worked at the Four Seasons: Maniscalco moved to Los Angeles in 1998 and began pounding the pavement on his comedic quest. He first made his name at the city’s famed Comedy Store where he performed at every opportunity, even if that meant rushing over to the club on a break from his waiter job at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Sebastian is One of Four Comedians Featured in Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days & 30 Nights – Hollywood to the Heartland: He’s joined with Ahmed Ahmed, John Caparulo, and Bret Ernst.

Sebastian Would Eventually Like to Star in a TV Sitcom: In a 2016 interview with The Chicago Tribune, Sebastian shared that NBC turned down a pilot he wrote, produced and acted in opposite Tony Danza, but that he’d still want to give TV a go.  “As time progresses your creative juices want to lead you to other avenues,” he told the paper. “You want to do stand-up but maybe there are other outlets there.”
