The Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City to Open MGM Resorts International Teen Center

The Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City will launch one of the most aggressive fundraising goals in its 45-year history with the announcement of a $2 million capital campaign to build a new Teen Center for Economic Development & College Readiness. The Club will be known as the MGM Resorts International Teen Center for Economic Youth Development & College Readiness thanks to a generous investment of $500,000 from MGM Resorts International, owner of Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa.

The goal of the Teen Center for Economic Development & College Readiness is to transform the future of the youth of Atlantic City by providing them a space they can go to after school to develop the necessary skills to graduate high school, attend college or begin a career. With more than 93% of Atlantic City Boys & Girls Club youths living under the poverty level, having a job and college readiness programs is vital to helping them find economic stability for them and their families.

Programs will include Work for development in three key industries: health, hospitality and technology. It will include a teaching kitchen, simulations rooms and fabrication lab, Academic enrichment in STEM classes, high school tutoring, SAT prep and college access program, and community workforce development opportunities and serves as a hub for other organizations that serve families impacted by the Boys & Girls Club

“Today we support about 1,900 youth a year. This center will not only help about 400 more kids, but it will expand our services to provide them with the skills and tools necessary to break the cycle of poverty. We could not transform the lives of so many without the support of MGM Resorts and our donors. Thanks to them we are well on our way to creating a better future for thousands of Atlantic City youth,” said Dr. Michelle Carrera, Executive Director, Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City.

Team Coco Presents Conan O’Brien and Friends at Borgata

Conan O’Brien will hit the road for the first time since 2010 when Team Coco Presents Conan & Friends on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Borgata’s Music Box Theater in Atlantic City, NJ.

 

America’s favorite tall, redheaded, self-deprecating TV funnyman is coming to Borgata, with a star-studded group of friends including Rory Scovel, James Veitch, Marina Franklin, and Flula Borg. The tour gives a glimpse into the growing comedy ecosystem Team Coco continues to create across all mediums including their growing digital studio, merchandise lines, and many other new lines of business.          

O’Brien added, “There are a lot of exciting changes coming up for me in 2019 and I wanted to kick it off this fall with an 18 city live tour.  The idea that I hit the road for 7 weeks was pitched by my wife, with the full backing of my children.” 

Building on the promise of a recently announced joint venture with Turner, Team Coco Presents Conan & Friends will advance O’Brien’s philosophy of bringing comedy everywhere. The multi-city tour will allow the comic to intimately reconnect and interact with his passionate fan base as he gears up for a leaner more agile 30 minute show on TBS, premiering January 2019.  The tour, like the new format gives O’Brien the flexibility to experiment and have fun with his audience in new ways.

Borgata’s Steve Ebner Named to Emerging Leaders of Gaming 40 Under 40

Emerging Leaders of Gaming (ELG) and Global Gaming Business magazine (GGB)  announced the 2018-19 class of the “ELG 40 Under 40,” which recognizes gaming industry professionals under the age of 40 already making significant impacts on the casino gaming industry.  One of Borgata’s own, Steven Ebner, Director of Slot Operations, has been named to the list.

“The ELG program has become the most important vehicle for recognition of young leaders in the gaming industry,” said Roger Gros, publisher of GGB magazine. “With nominations up nearly 50% year-over-year, the list was difficult to narrow. It’s a testament to the bright future of the industry how competitive the process has become.”

Steve is a true example of hard-work and dedication, practicing a hands-on leadership model, promoting a team philosophy with employees, and contributing to the frame-work of the exceptional Borgata service model.

Steve opened the Borgata in 2003 as a Slot Operations Supervisor. He was promoted to Slot Shift Manager and in January of 2018 assumed his current role.  He continually monitors the “larger property picture,” knowing what it takes to operate an integrated resort. Using his talents and natural communication style, he collaborates with, as he calls them, “the amazing team at Borgata,” that include all the supporting departments.  They review current operational practices, discuss new ways to enhance service operations, and are always looking for ways to make the Borgata guest experience unique.

Steve works closely with the marketing team and is on a first name basis with many of the Borgata regular customers.  Steve is also a member of MGM’s Corporate Social Responsibility, (CSR) committee. As one of the CSR Champions he is involved in MGM’s commitment to volunteerism and community spirit all integral elements of MGM Resorts’ culture. 

In 2018, Steve was selected as one of the Top 40 Under 40 professionals in Atlantic City by the staff of AC Weekly and the Atlantic City Junior Chamber of Commerce. Steve was recognized for his exceptional work ethic and team commitment at the Borgata, and for his community work with the Habitat Project and the South Jersey Field of Dreams.

Celebrate National Taco Day at Borgata

October 4 is National Taco Day, and it’s a great excuse to enjoy your favorite Mexican food all day long.  Borgata’s wide variety of restaurants has an assortment of delectable tacos that will make celebrating National Taco Day as easy as saying, “Ole!”

To start, head to The Marketplace Eatery and try Casa Taco Express.  Offering modern Mexican cuisine such as tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and freshly made guacamole, Casa Taco Express also serves traditional breakfast combinations and indulgent items like Brioche French Toast, Stuffed Egg Skillets, and Huevos Rancheros. It’s a great way to start celebration…all day long!

Borgata Beer Garden’s Soft Tacos provide a way to celebrate while catching the big game.  They come with either spiced beef or spicy chicken, lettuce, tomato, onions, and house salsa.  Or, head to our popular watering hole, Long Bar, for some serious drinks and serious tacos.  Their Fire Grilled Steak Tacos include charred poblanos, pickled onion, chimichurri, and oaxacan cheese.

RECIPE: Make Borgata’s Butterscotch Cake with Apple Pie Ice Cream

Are you looking for the perfect fall dessert to impress your guests? Why not try our Butterscotch Cake with Apple Pie Ice Cream?  Our in-house pastry team, including Assistant Executive Pastry Chef David Krzewinski, has developed this autumnal treat that you can make at home. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the changing colors, and makes for a great dessert this Thanksgiving!

For Apple Pie Ice Cream:

1 1/4 cups whole milk

2 1/4 cups heavy cream

2 tablespoons vanilla extract

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/8 tsp ginger

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup instant nonfat milk powder

pinch of salt

pinch of cloves

pinch of nutmeg

2 1/4 cups heavy cream

In a medium bowl whisk together granulated sugar, milk powder, spices and salt. Then whisk in the milk, cream and vanilla. Cover and store in refrigerator overnight. Pour into ice cream machine. Once ice cream is done spinning fold in chilled caramelized apple (recipe below).

For Caramelized Apples:

1 peeled cored granny Smith apple (small dice)

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon butter

1 tsp cinnamon

Place a medium sauté pan on the stove at medium/high heat. Slowly add sugar, ensuring that it melts after each addition.  Once sugar is melted, add a few cubes of apples and stir.  Then add the rest of the apples and ingredients. Cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes until apples are al dente and have a nice even caramel sauce. Remove from heat and chill.

For Butterscotch Cake:

2/3 cup butterscotch chips

1/4 cup water

1/2 cup vegetable oil

3/4 cup sugar

3/4 cup packed brown sugar

3 large eggs

2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup buttermilk

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Grease and flour baking pans.  In a microwave, melt butterscotch chips and water at 70% power for 1 minute; stir. Microwave at additional 10- to 20-second intervals, stirring until smooth. Cool to room temperature.  In a large bowl, combine all dry ingredients.  Add oil, eggs and vanilla. Whisk until combined.  Whisk in melted butterscotch and finally buttermilk in 3 parts. Fill pans halfway and bake 20-25 min or until cake springs back in the center.
