Celebrating Borgata’s Women: IT and Talent

March 27, 2019 by Brian Burke Leave a Comment

This March, Borgata celebrates Women’s History Month by honoring their phenomenal female team members. Throughout the month, Borgata will be profiling associates who truly define what it means to be not only a remarkable woman, but a remarkable employee.  In this post, we’re highlighting team members who work in our IT and Talent departments.

Colleen Campbell, IT Project Manager

What is the career highlight you are most proud of?  I love what I do.  There are always great moments during my everyday responsibilities and duties that make me feel proud and very blessed.  I am very fortunate to have a perpetual feeling of career highlights.

What’s the first career you dreamed of having as a child? An actress or stunt double.

What qualities do you value in the people with whom you work? Authenticity, optimism, and enthusiasm. Service above self.

What’s something you want to do in the next year that you’ve never done before? Become a certified Project Manager Professional (PMP).

Sandy Taylor, IT Systems Development Manager

What is your favorite activity in your current position and how often do you get to do it? I enjoy developing new software to help departments run more efficiently and increase revenue. I spend less than half the time working on new projects, but that’s okay.

What’s the first career you dreamed of having as a child? The first career I can think of is a professional tennis player.

Where do you volunteer and how has it impacted you? I have volunteered at charity walks and given blood several times. It feels good to do something to help others and meet new team members.

How many years have you been at Borgata? I have been at Borgata for eight years. My best memories were working with Roseanne and Stu in the lab, developing software for the slot department.

Alex Hennessey, Manager of Talent Initiatives

What is the career highlight you are most proud of? Being a part of the team that opened Borgata. The energy was electric and the knowledge gained during those months was priceless.

What is your favorite activity in your current position and how often do you get to do it? Solution finding is my favorite activity. I absolutely love recognizing a challenge and brainstorming with our team on a resolution that not only solves the issue, but has the ability to streamline processes to elevate productivity. I’m lucky enough to do this multiple times a week.

What is the one piece of advice you received which has changed your life? To push fear aside. Early on in my career, I had a boss that once said to me, “I’d rather see you with bumps and bruises on your forehead than tread marks on your back,” meaning that whatever you’re facing, take it head on. Don’t let it or anyone else run you over.

What qualities do you value in the people with whom you work? I love working with others that supply strength that will elevate the overall project with their skills, knowledge, and drive for success.

Dena Ferone, Community Engagement Manager

What is your favorite activity in your current position and how often do you get to do it? My favorite part is that I am required to interact with every single team member here at Borgata. I love people and I truly love helping people. Every day I get to meet and learn about team members all across the company in every department, doing all different jobs.

What is your definition of success? For me, I believe success is self-love, self-respect, and genuine happiness. I do not believe that there is one level of success but instead I see it as something we are constantly working on throughout our entire lives.

Who is someone you really admire? I met Emma several years ago because she was an 18-year-old youth who was homeless and sleeping out of her car for months while working two jobs and attending Stockton University. Emma was scared to confide in anyone about the situation she was facing until a professor figured it out and contacted the homeless youth crisis shelter I supervised. At such a young age, Emma is very aware of what fear, neglect, and the lack of love or nurturing can do to a person, but she never allowed that to define her. Emma graduated from Stockton with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and she continued her education and also obstained a Master’s. She the not only got accepted into Princeton University for her Doctor in Art Therapy, but received a full scholarship, including housing!

Kathy Mick, Director of Team Member Communications

What is the career highlight you are most proud of? Being on the opening team at Borgata was an amazing experience. I was able to help set the tone for us becoming the best in the market and what employees could expect from us.

What is your definition of success? Several things: doing the right thing, even when no one is watching; seeing a project through from beginning to end; and having a good work/home life balance.

If someone were to play you in a movie, who would you want it to be? Melissa McCarthy!

How many years have you been at Borgata? 17 years. My favorite memory is visiting the building for the first time and seeing the final phases of the building and finishing touches.

Karen Brundage-Johnson, Director of Employee Training & Development

What is the career highlight you are most proud of? I am very proud of my career at Borgata and the contributions I have been able to make to our company in 15 years. I’m also proud to have received support from Signe Huff, Vice President of Talent, and former colleague Eric Reynolds, Vice President of Government and Community Affairs, when I was inducted into the Atlantic County Women’s Hall of Fame in 2010.

What is your definition of success? It comes from one of my favorite authors, Dr. Maya Angelou: “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”

What’s the first career you dreamed of having as a child? I dreamed of being an attorney. I think working in Human Resources is closely aligned with the legal profession.

Where do you volunteer and how has it impacted you? I am a member of the Atlantic County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sority, Inc., where I volunteer with the sorority’s publicity and scholarship fundraising activities. I also volunteer at the Absecon Lighthouse, Field of Dreams, and as a career day guest speaker to elementary and middle school students hosted by the Atlantic County Women’s Hall of Fame.

Anna Higbee, Table Games Executive Secretary

What is your favorite activity in your current position and how often do you get to do it? Table Games is never dull. I have work that is the same every day, but my work is never the same throughout the day. One of my daily highlights is catching up with everyone as we stroll in to begin the day or during shift change.

What’s the first career you dreamed of having as a child? I always dreamt of being a teacher to young children. I wanted to make an impact through learning.

Who, or what, has been your biggest teacher? Becoming a parent. Being responsible for another human being is scary stuff and it never ends. It’s also the most rewarding job on earth.

What qualities do you value in the people with whom you work? Dependability, enthusiasm, honesty, and going the extra mile.

If someone were to play you in a movie, who would you want it to be? Cathy Bates.

Marie Dellaringa, Table Games Floor Supervisor

What is the career highlight you are most proud of? Being recognized for my hard work and receiving a highly sought after promotion.

How do you feel you impact the people around you? I try to recognize fellow employees who are working hard and let them know my appreciation.

What’s the first career you dreamed of having as a child? Being a veterinarian.

Where do you volunteer and how has it impacted you? I have volunteered with “Meals on Wheels” in Brigantine for the past 15 years. It is very rewarding to know that you are helping people who really need it. Sometimes, you get to meet the families who are very grateful.

Patricia Green, Table Games Assistant Shift Manager

How do you feel you impact the people around you? I firmly believe that you lead by example, so I always do my best while maintaining a positive attitude. I try to show each associate just how important their individual contribution is to our success.

Who is someone you really admire? I really admire Oprah Winfrey who came from a very humble and difficult beginning to achieve incomparable success. She uses her fame and fortune to do a great deal of good in the world.

What’s something you want to do in the next year that you’ve never done before? I’m looking forward to perfecting my stand-up paddle board skills.

Celebrating Borgata’s Women: Casino and Slot Operations

March 25, 2019 by Jen Jones Leave a Comment

This March, Borgata celebrates Women’s History Month by honoring their phenomenal female team members. Throughout the month, Borgata is profiling associates who truly define what it means to be not only a remarkable woman, but a remarkable employee.  In this post, we’re highlighting team members who work in our Casino and Slot Operations departments.

Kamini Surti, Slot Operations Shift Manager

What is the career highlight you are most proud of? Moving up with my career with the company as a Slot Operations Shift Manager.

How do you feel you impact the people around you? I impact the people around me through my strong work ethic, positivity, and leadership.

What is the one piece of advice you received which has changed your life? Be who you are and don’t let anyone put you down.

Who, or what, has been your biggest teacher? My mother has been the biggest mentor and the biggest inspiration in my life.

Marjorie Tomasic, Slot Operations Shift Manager

What is your favorite activity in your current position and how often do you get to do it? My favorite part of the job is definitely interacting and conversing with customers. I’ve gotten to know many guests over the years and it’s always a pleasure when they come in and ask for you.

Who is someone you really admire? My late parents are the two people I most admire. My love of reading and crafting came from my mother. My father taught us with hard work and dedication, you can achieve your goals.

What is the one piece of advice you received which has changed your life? You are responsible for your own destiny. The choices you make, the way you treat people, the outlook you have on life, falls solely on your own shoulders.

How many years have you been at Borgata? I have been at Borgata for just over 16 years. My favorite memory goes back to 2003 and being part of the team that worked at the Atlantic City Convention Center, interviewing applicants to work at Borgata.

Rosemarie Mason, Slot Operations Supervisor

How do you feel you impact the people around you? I try to engage the slot staff at pre-shift with easy jokes or trivia. If I don’t have a joke to tell, they are disappointed. I always tie in a learning lesson with the joke or trivia. I feel that my staff appreciates being sent off to the floor with a smile.

What is one thing about you that surprises others? People cannot guess my age. They think I’m much younger than I am!

If someone were to play you in a movie, who would you want it to be? Lily Tomlin. Like her, I can be funny or serious when needed.

How many years have you been at Borgata? I’ve been here for over 14 years. My favorite memory is every New Year’s Eve. The slot supervisors and managers coordinate with each other in selecting the same color shirt or blouse to wear with a black suit. At shift change, we have the “family” picture taken in the hotel lobby.

Rosalie Lopez, Online Gaming Compliance Manager

What is the career highlight you ar most proud of? Being involved in the opening of five brick-and-mortar casinos including Borgata, and BorgataCasino.com in 2013. Being on the forefront of online gaming has been exciting.

What is the one piece of advice you received which has changed your life? If you can’t get from where you are to where you want to be, try looking at the solution or problem backwards. The different perspective leads me to find alternative options.

What is one thing about you that surprises others? I love roller coasters.

What qualities do you value in the people with whom you work? Honesty, truthfulness, and directness.

Margie Simicich, Slot Operations Dual Rate Supervisor/Shift Manager

What’s the first career you dreamed of having as a child? I can remember wanting to be a vet, a pharmacist, and even a professional singer, which was definitely never going to happen, but little kids have high aspirations!

What is one thing about you that surprises others? When I was young, I was a competitive roller skater. I used to travel around the Northeast with my figure skating club for competitions.

What qualities do you value in the people with whom you work? I believe that one of the best qualities a person can have is respect towards others. I’ve always believed in treating everyone the same as I’d like to be treated.

How would your 10-year-old self react to what you do for a living? She’d probablly be shocked that I moved from a small town in upstate New York, where I graduated with only 60 people, to South Jersey specifically to work in the fast paced environment of Atlantic City.

Betty Parker, Casino Controller

What is the career highlight you are most proud of? As a woman, my career highlight would be “becoming a director” at a large company. It’s so important for women to know that they can be whatever they want to be by working hard, being honest, being themselves, and not being afraid to speak up for what is right, and, lastly, that there is a place at the table for women in today’s world if they want it.

Who is someone you really admire? I admire both my husband and son, who encouraged me to become a successful woman. They were both extremely supportive through the past 40 years, even when it wasn’t popular for women to leave their home to attempt to be successful.

Who, or what, has been your biggest teacher? My father was my biggest teacher. His hard work and dedication to his work and family will stay with me forever.

What qualities do you value in the people with whom you work? Integrity, honesty, devotion, and the eagerness to learn and help others.

Synthia Moore, Credit Executive

What is your favorite activity in your current position and how often do you get to do it? My favorite activity is the interactions with the guests and team members that take place daily. Everyone has a story. You just never know who you will come across and what the experience will be like.

What is your definition of success? My definition is being happy with living on my own terms and expectations. I set a goal and go after it until it’s obtained and if I fail, at least I learned something along the way.

Who, or what, has been your biggest teacher? My biggest teacher has been life! You make plans and they derail. You have hopes and dreams and sometimes they are put on hold or even fall flat. But, I’ve taken the approach of control what you can and everything else will fall into place.

If someone were to play you in a movie, who would you want it to be? I would want it to be my daughter. I aim to raise her much differently than the way I was. It would give her insight into my transformation through life and understanding why I am the way I am.

Tamara Brown, Director of Casino Cashiering

What is the career highlight you are most proud of? I’m most proud of my promotion to Director of Casino Cashiering. In my career, I’ve worked as a Cashier, Banker, Supervisor, Department Trainer, Dual Rate Manager, Shift Manager, and now Director of Casino Cashiering. I can understand every aspect of the job that my team does and I have used my experience to ear the respect and trust of my team.

How do you feel you impact the people around you? I believe that my team respects and trusts me not only because of the knowledge I provide, but my willingness to show that I’m not perfect. I walk in their shoes, listen to them, and will jump right in when they need help.

What is the one piece of advice you received which has changed your life? I was told once to never doubt myself, that I know more than I think. That has pushed me out of my comfort zone more than once and I’ve never regretted it.

How many years have you been at Borgata? I’ve worked at Borgata for 15 and a half years. My favorite memory was the time I paid a school teacher out a jackpot for over $100K. I couldn’t think of any person that would be more deserving of that kind a win.

VIDEO: St. Baldrick’s 2019 Head Shaving Event at Borgata

March 21, 2019 by Bryan Buttler Leave a Comment

Borgata hosted it’s second annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation head shaving event on March 15, 2019, benefiting the organization that raises funds towards childhood cancer research. Held at the Signature Room at Borgata, the event raised over $27,000 towards conquering childhood cancer.

Guests and Borgata Team Members enjoyed shaves and mini-spa treatments, while children had the opportunity to try face painting and more.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-powered charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. Every 2 minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer worldwide, and in the U.S. one in five kids diagnosed won’t survive. St. Baldrick’s is leading the charge to take childhood back from cancer.

Check out the video below from the event.

Denice Flick, Executive Director of Relationship Marketing

What is your favorite activity in your current position and how often do you get to do it?  My favorite activity is when I get to sit face-to-face and talk to my customers who choose to spend their weekends with us here at their home away from home.  The amazing thing is that I get to do this every weekend!

Who is someone you really admire?  I admire my mom: her strength, hard work, and determination have provided a positive role model for me throughout my life and has contributed to who I am today.

Where do you volunteer and how has it impacted you?  My husband, my sons, and I volunteer with the South Jersey Field of Dreams.  It’s an honor to be able to be a part of this organization to assist children and young adults, helping them play everyday sports such as baseball and basketball.  It always brings a smile to my face to see their smiling faces when they are having fun.

Who, or what, has been your biggest teacher?Experience has been my biggest teacher.  I’ll never say that I regret doing or saying anything.  I believe that learning from experience, whether good or bad, only makes you stronger to face the next experience along the way and learn from it.

Sarah Kimble, Director of Marketing Services

What is the career highlight you are most proud of? Starting the Fly Borgata program.

Who is someone you really admire? My former boss, Kelly Ashmen, and my current boss, Bill Callahan.

Over the course of the summer, we implemented a strategic entertainment and marketing campaign to celebrate Borgata’s relevance as the marketing-leading resort 15 years after its debut. My team hosted more than 200 journalists throughout the course of the birthday summer, resulting in more than 2 billion media impressions.

What is your definition of success? There is no success without responsibility—and the greatest responsibility is doing what’s right.

Where do you volunteer and how has it impacted you? As an ally to the LGBTQ+ community, I work with organizations to ensure LGBTQ+ rights are protected and guaranteed in and out of the work place.

Who, or what, has been your biggest teacher? Some of the most important, influential, and valued relationships in my life are with women. I wouldn’t be me without the incomparable support of my female peers and with them I know my strength is unyielding.

Queen Street, Loyalty Card Manager

How do you feel you impact the people around you? I feel I impact the people around me with my positive disposition and great customer service by being a role model for how to make customers feel welcome and comfortable. I try to make sure that everyone that steps foot in Borgata has a great experience.

What is one thing about you that surprises others? I always try to make sure people who are new to our area have someone to spend the holidays with. The holidays are the perfect time to bond with your family and I would hate for anyone to have to be alone during that time of the year.

If someone were to play you in a movie, who would you want it to be? I would want it to be Viola Davis. I think she is very strong and incredibly talented.

How would your 10-year-old self react to what you do for a living? She would be amazed and surprised at all of the technology and opportunities that have developed through the years. I don’t think I ever would’ve been able to imagine that I would be as fortunate to be in the position that I am in now.

Carie Wojdyla, Social Media Manager

What is your favorite activity in your current position and how often do you get to do it? My favorite activity is to work with my team to tell Borgata’s story by creating innovative content that drives awareness, traffic, and engagement. I’m lucky that I get to do this practically every day.

What is your definition of success? Being brave enough to challenge yourself to step outside of your comfort zone is my definition of success. It’s easy to stick to what you know or what comes easy. It’s the hard that makes something great.

Where do you volunteer and how has it impacted you? I’ve volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Field of Dreams, and packed lunches for children to have while on summer break from school. It makes me feel great, knowing I made a positive impact on someone else. No matter what I’m personally going through, I always remind myself that somewhere out there, someone is going through something even worse.

What is one thing about you that surprises others? When people learn that I traveled to Thailand by myself to build a house with Habitat for Humanity.

Bette Lee, Executive Director of Asian Marketing

What is the career highlight you are most proud of?  Borgata’s grand opening. Being a part of something so magnificent was a defining moment.

How do you feel you impact the people around you? I can only hope that I exude a positive energy and outlook that can gravitate towards others.

What’s the first career you dreamed of having as a child? An FBI agent inspired by TV re-runs.

What qualities do you value in the people with whom you work? Kindness, honesty, and a strong work ethic.

Becky Thiry, Director of Digital Media

Who is someone you really admire? My parents! My dad instilled a very strong work ethic in us. He is calm, kind, and sincerely devoted to helping others. My mom set an example to strive for excellence in everything we do in life, and to also help others as much as you can.

Where do you volunteer and how has it impacted you? I volunteer with MGM Resorts Foundation opportunities that relate to youth, including United Way initiatives. I am grateful that with MGM, more and more volunteer opportunities are available to us.

What is one thing about you that surprises others? I have completed several half-marathons, marathons, and triathlons. I am always looking for something new to challenge myself.

How many years have you been at Borgata? 10 years. I started as a Nightlife Marketing intern in 2007 and returned as a full-time team member in 2009 as a Nightlife Marketing Coordinator. I left Borgata in 2015 for a very brief stint in digital marketing for a utility company. During that time, I realized how much hospitality was a core part of me, and returned to Borgata!
