Tom’s Tips: NHL Betting 101

August 20, 2020 by Ryan Ross Leave a Comment

Tom Gable, Director of Race & Sports at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, provides our readers with insider tips and strategies for making the most of their sports betting ventures.  This week, Tom focuses on the basics of NHL betting and the various wagers a bettor can place at Borgata.

The NHL, much like the NBA, had to put their season on pause when COVID-19 shut sports down in March.  They restarted their season at the very beginning of this month using a “bubble” concept with teams playing in Edmonton and Toronto.  The NHL has now started their playoffs with teams currently playing in their first round series.

Let’s start with the basics of hockey betting, which is similar to baseball betting.  You can wager on a team to win a specific game outright on the moneyline (ex. the Dallas Stars are -130 favorites, which means for every $1.30 you wager, you would win $1.00 back, plus your original stake, if the Stars win the game).  You can also take a team on the puck line.  For example, if the Philadelphia Flyers are favored in a game, they would be listed -1 1/2 +180 on the puck line.  Flyers are 1 1/2 goal favorites and have to cover by scoring 2 or more goals in order for a bettor to win $1.80 for every $1.00 you wagered — plus your original stake back. So, let’s say I put down $10 on the Flyers, and they win the game 4-2.  I would win $18, plus my original $10 back.  Another common wager is on the total number of goals scored in a game.  The sportsbook will list what they believe will be the total goals scored, and the bettor will wager if the total will go over or under that number.  A common total in hockey is 5, so you would wager if the number of goals scored in a game is higher or lower than 5.  Tip: Goalies are often the most important players on the ice when considering the total number of goals scored in a game.

Some additional hockey bets include the top scoring team after the first period and whether there will be a goal scored in the first 10 minutes (this is a simple yes/no wager).  This wager has gained popularity over the last few years as customers know if they win or lose the wager after just 10 minutes, instead of waiting for an entire game to determine if you win or lose money.

At Borgata, you can also bet on which team will win the Stanley Cup, the Eastern and Western Conferences, and specific playoff series, including how many games each series will go (between 4-7 games).  Remember, to place your hockey bets at Borgata’s Race & Sports Book or at BetMGM Sportsbook and Bar.

Download the Borgata Sports app now or log onto BorgataSports.com to get started.

Tom’s Tips: Pitchers and Shorter Baseball Season

August 14, 2020 by Vanessa James Leave a Comment

Tom Gable, Director of Race & Sports at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, provides our readers with insider tips and strategies for making the most of their sports betting ventures.  This month, Tom focuses on how the MLB’s shorter season and newly implemented rules can affect bettors’ wagers.

Last week, we looked at how Major League Baseball’s adjusted structure affects the handicapping of season-long future wagers.  This week we are going to examine how some of those changes affect the daily game wagering.

Let’s start with the condensed schedule.  With only playing 60 games, there is added importance on every game.  Teams will still have to rest day-to-day players, but don’t count on starters missing too many games.  The National League has decided to adopt the “designated hitter” this year, just as the American League has in place, which means pitchers won’t have to hit.  Traditionally, pitchers are often weak hitters and are almost sure to make an out.  Without them in the batting line-up, you would think that more offense would be forthcoming.  One wager you can make on a baseball game is the amount of total runs scored in a game.  A sportsbook will post a number for total runs scored for a particular game and you can bet if you believe there will be more or less runs scored than that number.  But the other thing to consider, at least in the early-season games, is the layoff time between spring training and the season starting.  Hitters will take some time to readjust to live pitching and we have seen many games go “under” the run total early in the season.

Starting pitchers are the most important players when it comes to betting baseball games.  Oddsmakers make their lines based on who the starting pitchers are for a particular game.  If you find a team that has consistently had good starting pitching and may have conversely had some struggles offensively, this is a team to look at betting the “under” on.  The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cleveland Indians were too really good examples of this during the first two weeks of the season.  If you had consistently bet the “unders” in their games, you would have made a nice profit for yourself.  A series of local interest is coming up this weekend between the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies which features two teams that have been rather inconsistent in the early going.  If you are thinking about wagering on any of the games in this series, take a close look at who the starting pitchers are, as Jacob DeGrom has continued to be fantastic for the Mets and hasn’t allowed more than 2 runs in any of his starts yet this year (look at taking the “under” when he pitches).  For the Phillies, Aaron Nola has seemed to recapture some form after an initial poor start and has only allowed run one in each of his last two starts (again, look at taking the “under” when he pitches).

There are other rule changes for this season to keep in mind that will also affect total runs scored in games.  One is the extra-inning rule where a team will start extra innings with an automatic runner on second base.  This rule was instituted to allow extra inning games to reach their conclusion faster, but it can also drive up the total runs scored in a game.  If you are wagering in-game, this is important to keep in mind when looking at games that are tied in the later innings.

Additionally, don’t forget that all double-header games will only be 7 innings in length, instead of 9 innings per the MLB.  Make sure you do your research before you place that wager!  Starting pitchers are even more important in the 7 inning games.

Remember, you can bet every Major League Baseball game at Borgata at the Race & Sports Book or at BetMGM Sportsbook and Bar.

Q&A with Michael Schultz, Borgata’s Chief of Security on Health & Safety Changes

August 11, 2020 by Bryan Buttler Leave a Comment

The number one priority at Borgata is the health and safety of our guests and employees.  Throughout the last several months, the resort has worked closely with MGM Resorts to employ a Seven-Point Safety Plan to ensure that everyone can “do Borgata” safely.  Michael Schultz, Borgata’s Chief of Security, was instrumental in the implementation of the resort’s new safety measures.  We sat down with him to discuss some of the changes that guests will experience as they come back to Borgata.

For guests who might be interested in visiting Borgata during this time, what’s the most important thing that you’d want them to know before coming to the property?  At Borgata, the health and safety of our employees and our guests is our number one priority.

What is the mask policy at Borgata?  All employees and guests are required to wear masks in public spaces.  Should a guest or employee not have a mask, we’ll provide those free of charge.

What other health policies have you enacted for guests and employees?  We conduct health and temperature screenings for both employees and guests.  Should an employee or guest answer “yes” to any of the health screening questions, or register a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher, they will not be permitted access to the building and will be directed to follow up with their primary care physician for assistance. We have also implemented Borgata’s “B Clean” team, who will be working in guestrooms and on the casino floor to ensure high-touch surfaces and common areas are given the utmost attention with regards to cleanliness.

Tell us about the hand washing stations that have been installed.  We strongly encourage good personal hygiene.  We’ve installed custom build hand washing stations, designed by MGM Resorts, conveniently located on the casino floor.  Each station has four sinks, separated six feet apart, and each sink has contactless faucet, soap dispenser, and paper towel dispenser.

Where can guests find hand sanitizer: We’ve deployed over 60 hand sanitizer stations, which are contactless and located throughout the facility.
