OUT at Borgata a Sponsor of the Garden State Equality 2020 Equality Ball and Virtual Walk

October 22, 2020 by Bryan Buttler Leave a Comment

This year, Borgata was a proud sponsor of Garden State Equality’s 2020 Equality Ball and their month-long 2020 Virtual Equality Walk.  The “Equality Ball-ish 2020” took place on October 15 at The Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park, New Jersey.  The event was a socially-distant evening that celebrated the work that Garden State Equality does for the LGBTQ+ community in New Jersey and beyond.

Additionally, the organization’s largest annual fundraiser, the Equality Walk, is taking place virtually in 2020.  Garden State Equality urges participants to plan their own Equality Walk route throughout the Month of October and post photos to social media, using the hashtag #EqualityWalk.  Fund raised throughout the month will be used to support Garden State Equality’s work in education, advocacy, and healthcare.

Established in 2004, Garden State Equality (GSE) is the largest LGBTQ advocacy organization in New Jersey and one of the most successful statewide civil rights organization for the LGBTQ community in the nation. Their services include advocacy, policy work, and trainings.  Find out more about them here.

Borgata First to Reopen Poker Operations in Atlantic City

October 21, 2020 by Becky Grimm Leave a Comment

Borgata reopened The Poker Room at 10am on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Borgata is the first resort in Atlantic City to return poker operations following the closure of New Jersey casinos earlier this year amidst the coronavirus crisis.

Borgata Poker returned with 30 socially distanced tables following the company’s comprehensive health and safety protocols designed to protect employees and customers.  All poker play is live cash games on seven-handed tables with polycarbonate barriers. Masks are required in all public areas and spectators are not permitted.  Additionally, hand sanitizing machines were installed throughout the Poker Room.

Earlier this year, Borgata implemented the MGM Resorts’ “Seven-Point Safety Plan,” a multi-layered set of protocols and procedures designed in conjunction with medical and scientific experts. The plan balances the high level of customer service guests expect from Borgata with policies that continually evolve based on data, science, and public health guidelines. Key initiatives from the plan include:

  • Employee screening, temperature checks and COVID-19 specific training.

  • Masks required in all public areas for both employees and guests (and provided free of charge).

  • Guest screening and temperature checks with limited casino entrance points.

  • A physical distancing policy with floor guides serving as reminders.

  • For areas where physical distancing presents challenges, polycarbonate barriers will be installed, or other measures will be used to reduce risks.

  • Standalone handwashing stations designed by MGM Resorts conveniently located on the casino floor.

  • Guestroom Attendants will wear masks and gloves while cleaning each room and will change gloves between guestrooms.

  • In addition to increased and enhanced routine cleaning of guestrooms and public spaces based on CDC guidance, electrostatic sprayers will be utilized in many large public spaces so that disinfectant is applied efficiently.

  • MGM has compiled its own internal team and processes to respond if a guest or employee tests positive for COVID-19. We ask that if a guest tests positive after visiting one of our properties, they alert us through a special email address (covid19@mgmresorts.com). We will immediately report any positive test results to the local health department and assist with contact tracing to support the health department investigators.

Tom’s Tips: 2020 MLB World Series

October 20, 2020 by Brian Burke Leave a Comment

Tom Gable, Director of Race & Sports at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, provides our readers with insider tips and strategies for making the most of their sports betting ventures. This week, Tom is setting expectations for the 2020 World Series and rounding up everything you need to know about the two competing teams.

The 2020 World Series match up is set and will feature the Los Angeles Dodgers taking on the Tampa Bay Rays in a best of 7 game series.  The World Series this year will be played on a neutral field in Texas with limited fans in attendance due to the ongoing pandemic.  Unlike the National League Championship Series and American League Championship Series, where there were no days off for the players, the World Series will have a day off (or two depending on the length of the series) between games.

Borgata opened the World Series betting by listing the Dodgers as -200 favorites to win, meaning you would have to wager $200 to win $100 if you wanted to bet the Dodgers.  Keep in mind, that pricing for the World Series winner constantly changes and there are opportunities if one team goes down a game or two in the series, to get a better price.  This happened in the National League Championship Series when the Dodgers, who were heavy series favorites before the NLCS began against the Braves, found themselves down 2-0 after two games.  The odds flipped at that point to make the Braves the favorite to win the series.  If you had a conviction that the Dodgers would come back and win the series (which they obviously did), you could get them at a great price and really make some money if you bet them to win.  Let’s now take a look at this match-up between LA and Tampa Bay.

The Tampa Bay Rays come into the World Series after defeating the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series.  The Rays had to sweat it out after winning the first 3 games of the series and then losing the next 3 and having to go to a decisive 7th game.  But they came out on top and are looking to win their first World Series title.  The Rays feature very good pitching led by Charlie Morton, Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow and also have one of, if not the best, bullpens in all of baseball.  It is going to be a classic match-up to see those pitchers go up against one of the most dangerous batting line-ups in Major League Baseball.  The Dodgers can score a lot of runs (see game 3 of the NLCS when they scored a record 11 runs in the first inning) and feature a line-up that includes former MVP’s and a number of All Stars, such as Mookie Betts, Cody Bellinger, Justin Turner, and Joc Pederson.  While the Rays probably have the edge in the pitching match-up, don’t sleep on the Dodgers pitching staff.

Borgata will be offering some great wagering options on the World Series, from individual games to series pricing to a number of prop bets throughout.  You can place your World Series wagers at the Borgata Race and Sportsbook, BetMGM Sportsbook and Bar, or online at Borgatasports.com.

Wine 101 with Borgata’s Wine Manager Laura Turenne

October 13, 2020 by Brian Burke Leave a Comment

Wine shouldn’t be intimidating.  To use the words of Borgata’s Wine Manager Laura Turenne, “The first thing to remember is that wine is just grapes in a bottle. It should not scare you.” Chances are that if you’ve spent time at Borgata, you’ve seen Laura assisting guests by answering their go-to wine questions. We sat down with Borgata’s Wine Manager to experience “Wine 101.”

Wine can be intimidating for some people. What’s the best way for an “amateur” to start exploring wine?  Wine should not be any more intimidating than any other food or beverage.  It’s just another piece of your meal and your day out.  I’m a big believer that if I see a wine that I’ve never tried before on the “by the glass” menu, I’m willing to try that glass instead of having to buy a whole bottle.  If I’m going to have folks over for a BBQ, I will invite them to each bring a bottle within a certain perimeter, like, “Everyone bring a bottle of California wine,” so we have a category and we can compare and contrast.

What are some of your favorite wines for the changing fall season?  The classic answer is Rhône varieties, that come from a valley of France.  This time of year, those wines are savory and they have a nice weight to them that’s not over the top, so it is a nice transition: Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah are all red, and Roussane and Viognier are both white.  For me, personally, I transition into dessert in a glass.  This is the time of year I might have a little Icewine from the Niagara Escarpment, or I might have some port, or French Sauternes, a little something that helps round things out.

What are some basic tips for pairing wine with food? If you go back and look at the classic Better Homes and Gardens magazines, you’ll see red with meat and white with fish, and there’s truth to that, but it’s not a hard and fast rule. The biggest rule is to drink what you like.  If you drink what you like, you’re going to be a happy person.  However, a big bold flavor needs a big bold wine to counter balance.  For instance, if you’re drinking a Pinot grigio with a ribeye steak, you’re probably not going to experience the full impact of the wine.  Another good rule is that what grows together, goes together  It’s just the nature of nature that these things are all grown together in the same fields and valleys.  So, when they come together in the plate and the glass, they balance each other well.

What is your “go to” wine when you are at home? I will admit that I don’t have a single go-to, just like you might not have the same shirt you pull out to wear every day.  Every day when I get home, it’s what I’m feeling like.  If I’ve been busy all day and helping guests, maybe I want something lighter and more refreshing.  Mood is the defining characteristic.  However, if I had to pick my deserted desert wine, it’s rosé champagne.  Wine drinkers aren’t quite a pigeonholed as, say, beer drinkers.

What’s your favorite cocktail to make with wine?  There’s always a good sangria for every season, but I am a fan of classic: a French 75.  It’s light, it’s enjoyable, and yet you get this elevated feeling because you’re still drinking champagne.
