Tom’s Tips: 2020 NBA Draft

November 25, 2020 by Ryan Ross Leave a Comment

Tom Gable, Director of Race & Sports at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, provides our readers with insider tips and strategies for making the most of their sports betting ventures. This week, Tom is taking a deep dive into the 2020 NBA Draft and how crucial picks could change the outcome of the upcoming season.

The 2020 version of the NBA Draft played out virtually last week, much like we have become accustomed to throughout this strange year.  Teams still made their picks, draft selections were announced, and the players got to celebrate with their families at home.  While it was conducted virtually, it still amounts to a life-changing experience for all of the players selected. The teams that selected them are hoping that their picks change the course of their franchises. This week we will take a look at some of the top picks that were selected and how they may alter the teams that selected them.  More importantly, it may not necessarily be the draft picks that make the biggest differences but the host of trades that accompanied the draft and free agent signings.  Teams were in full dealing mode, swapping picks and veterans, all with an eye to improve their franchises.  We will look at a few teams that have improved (on paper at least) and how that has affected their odds to win a championship.

The overall #1 pick in the draft this year was made by the Minnesota Timberwolves, who were allegedly looking to trade out of the pick just minutes before their selection was due.  They chose Anthony Edwards, a talented wing who should definitely have an impact on the team.  The T’Wolves also added Ricky Rubio in a trade later in the day, giving them a pretty good guard rotation overall.  That being said, Minnesota is still a few years away from contending and the pick and trade had no effect whatsoever on their longshot title odds (200/1 currently at Borgata).

The #2 pick was made by the Golden State Warriors, who selected James Wiseman.  While injuries decimated the Warriors last season and prevented them from contending for another championship, the 2020-2021 season was looking up for Warriors fans.  Not only did they have the overall #2 pick in the draft but superstars Steph Curry and Klay Thompson would be back on the court.  However, just about an hour before the draft started, news hit the wire that Thompson tore his Achilles during a pick-up game which means he will be out once again for another season.  While Wiseman will still be a welcome addition, without Thompson the Warriors’ title odds went from as low as 6/1 to 10/1.

One team who has had their odds shorten dramatically over the last week, are the Phoenix Suns, who selected tenth overall.  Their pick, Jalen Smith, is not the reason their odds moved so dramatically.  The Suns acquired Chris Paul from Oklahoma City which moved their odds to win the NBA Championship from 80-1 to 50-1 and their Western Conference odds from 50-1 to 25-1.  The Suns also picked up Jae Crowder from the Miami Heat creating depth to their front court.  They were already a team to keep an eye on after how they played in the bubble at the end of last season (going undefeated against the spread) and with these additions, should definitely be a contender for a playoff spot and a very exciting team to watch for years to come.

Finally, that brings us to the reigning NBA Champions, the Los Angeles Lakers.  The Lakers are the clear-cut favorite to win the title again after all of their moves.  Once the NBA lifted the trade moratorium, the Lakers moved quickly and traded Danny Green and the 28th pick in the draft to Oklahoma City for Dennis Schroder.  They then signed Wesley Matthews to fill the void they created by trading Green.  But their biggest coup was signing Sixth Man of the Year, Montrezl Harrell, on the first night of free agency.  The Lakers got younger almost overnight even though they were lacking in draft picks this year.  The Lakers odds moved from 4/1 to 3/1.

You can make all of your NBA future wagers (to win the championship, conferences and divisions) at the Borgata Race and Sportsbook, the BetMGM Sportsbook and Bar or online at Borgatasports.com.

A Guide to Slots at Borgata

November 19, 2020 by Vanessa James Leave a Comment

Borgata’s casino floor offers a wide variety of slot machines for all types of players, and with selections constantly changing, there’s always something new for guests.  However, even seasoned players are always looking helpful strategies when trying to select the perfect slot machine.  Here are some practical tips that will make your slot experience at Borgata more enjoyable.

Service Button: There’s a feature on slots machines that can be used to call a slot attendant if you are having any issues.  When a MLife card is properly inserted, the option for “Slot Service” will be displayed in the upper right-hand corner of the iView digital panel on the machine.  After selecting “Yes” from the slot service menu, a slot attendant will be dispatched to the location.

Slot Finder: Can’t seem to locate your favorite machine?  No problem.  Borgata has Slot Finders located throughout the resort.

Colored Lights: Have you ever wondered what the color light on the top of your slot machine means?  The colors correlate to the denomination of the slot.  Red is .05, yellow is .25, orange is .50, blue is $1, pink is $2, and purple is $5 and up.  Penny machines are random colors as most are pre-determined by the manufacturer and are not able to be changed.  However. 05 and above are universal.

New Games: Borgata’s Slot Team attempts to have new themes on the floor every week. It’s our goal to have something new for our guests each time they visit!

DID YOU KNOW? Wheel of Fortune™ paid out over $1.4 Million over 6 different machines and Lightning Cash™ in Miralto paid out over $3.4 Million over 7 machines during the month of October?!

Tom’s Tips: Week 9 of Football

November 12, 2020 by Matt Stout Leave a Comment

Tom Gable, Director of Race & Sports at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, provides our readers with insider tips and strategies for making the most of their sports betting ventures. This week, Tom is reflecting on Week 9 of football and setting expectations for the remainder of the NFL season.

We are now more than halfway through the NFL season and have one unbeaten team remaining (the Pittsburgh Steelers) and one team that remains without a single win (the New York Jets).  The NFC appears to have a lot of parity at the top of the conference with 4 or 5 teams that seem capable of making it to the Super Bowl.  The AFC, despite having the undefeated Steelers, appears to have the reigning Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs and then a few other contenders that will be looking to unseat the Chiefs. This week, we are going to take a look at some of the top contenders in both conferences with their current Super Bowl odds and how likely they are to win the big game.

Let’s start in the NFC, where the Seattle Seahawks, Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints all seem to have legitimate chances to win the conference with a few teams bubbling right below them at the halfway mark, including the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams.  Out of the teams at the top, the Tom Brady-led Buccaneers have the shortest odds to win the Super Bowl right now at Borgata Sportsbook at +700 (meaning for every $1 you wager, you would win $7 if the Buccaneers win the Super Bowl).  Despite just getting thrashed last Sunday night by their division counter-parts, the New Orleans Saints (currently +900 to win the Super Bowl), the Buccs have played extremely well this season and with a ferocious defense and a lot of offensive weapons for Brady to throw to, you can’t count this team out to make a long playoff run.  While the Saints have now beaten them twice this season, New Orleans has looked very weak at times as well, suffering a couple of losses.  The Green Bay Packers (currently +1100) got off to a very hot start but had their unbeaten streak broken by Tampa Bay a few weeks ago, but they do have a win against the Saints (again, parity is the name of the game in the NFC).  This brings us to the Seattle Seahawks (currently +1000).  Seattle plays in what is the toughest division in the NFC (the West), alongside playoff contenders the LA Rams, Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers.  Seattle seems to be able to score at will behind quarterback and MVP candidate Russell Wilson.  However, their defense has been sorely lacking and are one of the worst defenses in all of football.  They can’t seem to muster any sort of pass rush and give up a lot of points (weekly tip: consider wagering on the “over” in Seattle’s games as they are the perfect team for it, they score a lot of points and can’t stop their opponents from scoring).  Seattle remains dangerous though simply due to Wilson’s presence on the offensive side of the ball.

Now let’s take a look at the AFC and start with the unbeaten Pittsburgh Steelers (currently +600 to win the Super Bowl).  Pittsburgh has beaten some very tough opponents this year already including teams that are at the top of the AFC like the Baltimore Ravens and the Tennessee Titans.  You can’t argue with an undefeated record, but they are not the current favorite to win the Super Bowl.  That goes to the Kansas City Chiefs (+350) who continue to look like the championship team they were one year ago.  The Chiefs are of course led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes who continues to pull out magical plays and appears to have a natural ability that very few other quarterbacks in the league can match, or even come close to.  The Chiefs have suffered one loss on the season (an upset loss to the Las Vegas Raiders) and will more than likely lose another game before the regular season comes to an end.  But they are still the one team in the conference that no one wants to face in the playoffs.  Some other teams in the AFC that you may want to look at include the Baltimore Ravens (+900) and the Buffalo Bills (+1800).  While the Bills just beat up on the Seahawks last week, I am still hesitant to say that they can match up with the best of the best in their conference in the playoffs.  Only time will tell.

You can continue to wager on who you believe will win the Super Bowl, the NFC and AFC and individual division winners along with MVP, Coach of the Year, and a number of other awards at  Borgata Race and Sportsbook, BetMGM Sportsbook and Bar, or online at Borgatasports.com.
