OUT at Borgata Blog – LGBT Events & Online Community
For the first time ever, Borgata was a corporate sponsor at the 2016 Human Rights Campaign’s Greater Philadelphia Gala on Saturday, February 27. The popular event, which featured many of the country’s premiere civil rights leaders, was held at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown and included a silent auction and dinner.
Borgata’s Senior Vice President of Operations, Joe Lupo, who was in attendance, said that the resort’s support of the HRC was natural for Borgata.
“It stems from the very beginning that we want to create an environment that promotes equality for our customers and employee base,” Lupo said. “[The HRC] fit cohesively with this vision.”
If you liked variety, you clearly weren’t disappointed at this past Saturday’s raucous evening of drag at Borgata’s Music Box featuring the talents of Sherry Vine, Katya, Pandora Boxx, and Ginger Minj. The queens presented what can best be described as a naughty variety show for Atlantic City audiences, featuring everything from a partying Elsa from Frozen to a stripping Adele.
On Saturday, February 20, expect a Pandora’s Boxx to be opened at Borgata’s Music Box venue: Some of America’s top drag talent will invade Atlantic City for one night only, and there will be many familiar faces on stage. Sherry Vine, Ginger Minj, Katya, and Pandora Boxx will present a special evening, aptly titled America’s Drag Stars, for Borgata audiences, and nothing is off limits. We had a chance to sit down with two of the queens, Sherry and Pandora, to get a little preview of what to expect from their performances, plus some scoop on projects they are both working on.

The Independence Business Alliance (IBA) had a landmark 2015: The greater Philadelphia LGBT chamber of commerce hired its first ever Executive Director, Zachary Wilcha, and also announced that Borgata would become one of the organization’s new corporate sponsors. Zachary joined IBA in October of last year, and brings his previous experience as an attorney, plus years as an active volunteer at a variety of organizations throughout the region, to the position. We sat down with Zach to chat about his new role with IBA, why Borgata was a good fit, and how our readers can learn more about joining the Independence Business Alliance.
Welcome to the new OUT at Borgata blog! My name is Bryan and I’m excited to be curating the content of this area for our readers. We’ll be bringing you not only great behind-the-scenes previews of entertainment, dining, and experiences at Borgata, but also some wonderful stories of local LGBT organizations and leaders in the region who are making a real impact.
A bit about me: I grew up in New Jersey and currently live in Center City Philadelphia where I write on the arts for a number of local and national publications. I’ve also covered gay news for over two years and have become quite familiar with a number of people, places, and things that are noteworthy for LGBT folks. Additionally, I am a professor of communications in South Jersey, so I am quite plugged in to the region. In my spare time, you’ll find me enjoying the performing arts (opera is my guilty pleasure), practicing yoga, traveling, and enjoying good meals and mixology.

Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa has always been committed to its role as the leader in Atlantic City’s live concert and entertainment offerings. And we’ve made providing resort visitors with the best in summer entertainment a priority.
So we were pretty proud of ourselves to have presented Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett at Borgata’s Event Center on Friday, July 24.
This was a show that sold out in minutes back in February, and the two great entertainers did not disappoint.
Performing with a full orchestra, they opened the show with the classic, and fairly appropriate, “Anything Goes,” followed by their smash hit “Cheek to Cheek.”
It’s a rare thing to see an 88-year-old singer in Bennett hold his own with a 29-year-old singer in Gaga, but the reviews are in and Bennett’s voice was as smooth and pure as if he were 29 as well.
As Billboard Magazine said in its review:
“Even though Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga’s “Cheek to Cheek” duets album has been with us for nearly a year, nothing quite prepares you for the startling contrast and sheer delight of seeing the 88-year-old vocal legend and the 29-year-old pop icon onstage together, singing material written before Gaga’s father was even born.”
“So when a dapper Bennett and shimmery Gaga took the stage at Borgata’s Event Center on Friday night in Atlantic City, the novelty of the unlikely-yet-organic pairing didn’t wear off until after they’d finished a one-two-three punch opener of “Anything Goes,” “Cheek to Cheek” and “They All Laughed.”
For modern music fans, the idea of two star singers sharing a stage and swapping banter and mixing together classic song stylings might seem a little foreign, but it was much more common when Bennett started his career.
With Lady Gaga, Bennett has undoubtedly brought the idea back.
